Dropped Object Study - ASWN

The document presents a study on assessing risks and protection measures for pipelines against dropped objects and ship impacts. It outlines objectives to minimize pipeline damage and ensure no hydrocarbon release, along with a structured methodology for risk assessment. The conclusion indicates that no additional mechanical protection is needed if failure frequency is within acceptable limits, though a concrete mattress may be considered for extra protection.

INTRODUCTION
Pipeline’s dropped object study focuses on providing a methodology for
assessing the risks and required protection from dropped crane loads and ship
impact to risers and pipeline systems within the safety zone of installations.

Two typical accidental loading scenarios that can lead to damage to riser,
pipelines and umbilical.
Impact due to dropped objects
Pull-over/hooking ; due to dragged trawl board or anchor

The acceptance criteria shall state the acceptable limits for the risks related to
human safety
environment
OBJECTIVE

Minimize the probability of pipeline impact damage.

To adequately protect the pipeline so that any object falling on the pipeline
will not produce a dent large enough to affect the service or impair routine
pigging operations.
To ensure no release of hydrocarbons during the operation of the pipeline
system.
ANALYSIS OF METHODOLOGY
This methodology provides a structured process to assess risks, evaluate impacts, and
implement protective measures for pipeline safety.

DAMAGE CLASSIFICATION
Pipeline Condition Hydrocarbon Release
Minor Damage- D1 No Release- R0
Moderate Damage- D2 Small Release- D2
Major Damage- D3 Major Release- D3
HIT PROBABILITY
To calculate the conditional probability of object to fall on the seabed
To calculate the probability of object to hit the pipeline or riser within
10m radius by considering the length in the covered radius
To calculate the hit frequency, including the no. of lift/ year
HIT FREQUENCY VS ENERGY
To calculate the hit frequency for different impact of energy level

Conditional probabilities of impact energy

DAMAGE CAPACITY VS ENERGY
Considering the condition of the pipeline
Steel pipe only
Steel pipe with concrete coating
DAMAGE VS FREQUENCY
Determined by combining the “hit frequency vs energy" and “damage capacity vs energy”

Note:
[Link] class D1 is not considered to give damage leading to failure.
CONCLUSION
No additional mechanical protection required for
failure frequency that within allowable limit, dropped
object event can considered negligible

For additional protection, Concrete Mattress can be

considered for protection against dropped object
