Calculus Notes Complete

Calculus is the mathematics of change, focusing on rates of change (differential calculus) and accumulation (integral calculus). Key concepts include limits, continuity, derivatives, and integrals, with applications in various fields such as physics and economics. The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus connects derivatives and integrals, and effective study strategies emphasize understanding and regular practice.

Complete Calculus Notes

1. What is Calculus?
Calculus is the mathematics of change. It studies how quantities vary and how accumulation works.

1 Differential Calculus → rates of change (derivatives)

2 Integral Calculus → accumulation and area
3 Used in physics, engineering, economics, biology
2. Limits
A limit describes the value a function approaches as x approaches a number.

1 lim x→a f(x)

2 Direct substitution if continuous

3 Factor and cancel for 0/0 form

4 Rationalize radicals when needed

3. Continuity
A function is continuous if:

1 f(a) exists
2 lim x→a f(x) exists
3 lim x→a f(x) = f(a)
4. Derivatives
Derivative = instantaneous rate of change.

1 f'(x) = lim h→0 [f(x+h) − f(x)] / h

2 Slope of tangent line
3 Velocity = derivative of position
5. Derivative Rules

1 Power Rule: d/dx(x^n) = nx^(n−1)

2 Product Rule: (fg)' = f'g + fg'

3 Quotient Rule: (f/g)' = (f'g − fg')/g²

4 Chain Rule: derivative of outer × inner

6. Applications of Derivatives

1 Find slope at a point

2 Optimization problems

3 Related rates

4 Curve sketching
7. Integrals
An integral represents accumulated change or area under a curve.

1 Indefinite integral → family of functions

2 Definite integral → numeric area
3 ∫f(x)dx
8. Fundamental Theorem of Calculus

1 Connects derivatives and integrals

2 ∫ from a to b f(x)dx = F(b) − F(a)
3 F is antiderivative of f
9. Basic Integration Rules

1 Power Rule: ∫x^n dx = x^(n+1)/(n+1) + C

2 Constant multiple rule
3 Sum rule
10. Study Strategy

1 Understand concepts before memorizing

2 Practice regularly

3 Check units and meaning

4 Draw diagrams when possible
