Q.27 to Q.34 contain Eight long answer type questions, each carrying Four marks. (Attempt any Five)

8. If a die is rolled, what is the probability of getting an even number?

20. If the p.d.f. of a continuous random variable is f(x) = kx for 0 < x < 1, find k.

21. Show that the area of a rectangle with a fixed perimeter is maximum when it is a square.

22. Prove that the function f(x) = e^x is always increasing.

27. Find the maximum area of a rectangle inscribed in a circle of radius r.

28. Prove that the angle of elevation of the sun can be determined using the height of a vertical pole and the

29. Show that the height of a cone of maximum volume that can be inscribed in a sphere is equal to the radius of
the sphere.

30. If the p.m.f. of a discrete random variable X is given by P(X=x) = k(1/2)^x for x = 0, 1, 2, ..., find k and the
expected value of X.

31. A box contains 10 balls, 4 red and 6 blue. If 3 balls are drawn at random, find the probability that at least one
ball is red.

32. If the p.d.f. of a continuous random variable X is given by f(x) = 3x^2 for 0 < x < 1, find the variance of X.
