Rules of Writing a Good Imaginative Composition
1. Understand the Question/Topic: Read the prompt carefully and stick to the main idea.

2. Plan Before You Write: Brainstorm characters, setting, and plot. Create a rough outline.

3. Start with a Hook: Use a catchy opening line to grab attention.

Your opening sentence should grab attention.

Use dialogue: “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing…”

Use action: “The car screeched to a halt, narrowly missing me.”

Use description: “The night was darker than any I had ever seen.”

4. Use a Clear Structure: Include an introduction, body (conflict and climax), and conclusion.

Introduction: Introduce characters, setting, and mood.

Body: Build the story – include conflict, suspense, or a challenge.

Climax: The turning point – the most exciting or tense part.

Conclusion: Resolve the story logically and memorably.

5. Show, Don’t Just Tell: Use vivid descriptions to paint a picture.

e.g Instead of “I was scared,” write “My hands trembled and my heart pounded as I stepped
forward.”

Use vivid descriptions (sights, sounds, smells, feelings).

6. Use Dialogue Effectively: Make it realistic and punctuate correctly.

Dialogue makes your story lively.

Keep it realistic and related to the story.

Use correct punctuation:

“Are you coming?” asked John.

“Yes,” I replied.

7. Use Figurative Language: Incorporate similes, metaphors, and imagery.

“The wind howled like a lonely wolf.”

“Fear wrapped around me like a cold blanket.”

8. Use Varied Sentence Structures: Mix short and long sentences for rhythm.

Use transitional words like suddenly, however, meanwhile, in the end etc.

9. Maintain a Consistent Tense: Avoid switching tenses unnecessarily.

10. End Powerfully: Conclude logically and memorably.

Don’t end abruptly. Tie up loose ends or leave a thought-provoking ending.

A good closing line could reflect on the events or give a twist.

The Day I Almost Lost Everything

The sun had barely risen when I realized that this was going to be the most unforgettable
day of my life. A strange knock on my window startled me from sleep. At first, I thought it
was just the wind, but the sound grew louder, followed by hurried footsteps outside.
Curious and slightly uneasy, I peered through the curtains and saw a shadow moving
quickly across the yard. Something about it didn’t feel right.

I slipped on my jacket and stepped outside, the cool morning air biting my skin. The
neighborhood was eerily quiet. Then I noticed it—smoke, thick and black, rising from
behind the old warehouse near our home. Without thinking, I grabbed my phone and
sprinted towards the source. Halfway there, I heard a faint cry for help. My heart pounded.
Someone was trapped.

“Hello? Where are you?” I shouted, pushing open the rusty door of the warehouse. Inside,
flames danced hungrily along the wooden beams. The heat hit me like a wall. I spotted a
young boy cowering in a corner, tears streaming down his face. Without hesitation, I ran to
him, covering his face with my jacket and guiding him towards the exit.

Just as we were about to step out, a deafening crash shook the ground. A beam, engulfed in
flames, collapsed, blocking our way. I coughed violently as smoke filled my lungs. My vision
blurred. I had one option—smash the small window on the side wall. I wrapped my arm in
my jacket and struck the glass until it shattered. “Climb out!” I shouted, pushing the boy
through the gap.

The smoke was overwhelming now, each breath like inhaling fire. I tried to follow the boy,
but my strength failed me. My knees buckled, and I fell, the world spinning into darkness.

When I opened my eyes, I was lying on the ground outside, the boy clutching my hand, tears
of relief rolling down his cheeks. A crowd had gathered, and someone had dragged me out
just in time. As I regained consciousness, I was grateful for another chance at life.

Suspense Opening

chains as I turned to see the raging fire devouring everything behind us. The thick smoke
stung my eyes, blurring my vision. I could hear my brother’s voice, desperate and trembling,
but my body refused to obey. At that moment, I knew that if I didn’t find the strength to run,
we would both be trapped forever.

Mystery Opening
The old, creaking gate opened slowly, and for a moment, I felt a chill run down my spine. I
had not been to that house for years, yet every corner still whispered secrets of my
childhood. The air was heavy with the scent of dust and memories. Something about the
silence inside felt unsettling, as if the walls themselves were watching me. With each step I
took, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that I was not alone.
