Clocks that measure time accurately could be made only after the discovery of the simple pendulum
by the Italian scientist Galileo Galilei. A simple pendulum consists of a metal ball called bob
suspense by a long thread from a rigid support, such that bob is free to swing back and forth. He
discovered that if a mass hung from a fixed point is made to swing freely, it always completes one to
and fro motion in exactly the same [Link], he timed the oscillations by counting the beats of his
pulse. This observation led to the development of pendulum clocks.
i) The length of the pendulum is
a) AB b) OB c) AC d) CB
ii) The time taken for 20 oscillations is 52 seconds. The time period of this pendulum is
a) 5.2 sec b) 2.0 sec c) 2.6 sec d) none of these
iii) A simple pendulum is oscillating between two points C and A as shown in figure. The motion of the
bob is
a) Periodic b) Non-Periodic c) Rest d) None of these
iv) ‘A’ covers 10m in 2 sec & ‘B’ covers 15m in 3 sec. Who among the two is moving faster?
a) A b) B c) both are moving at same speed d) none of these.

Generally, pollen grains have a tough protective coat which prevents from drying up. Since
pollen grains are light, they can be carried by wind or water. Insects visit flowers and carry
away pollen on their bodies. Some of the pollen lands on the stigma of a flower of the same kind.
The transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma of a flower is called pollination. If the pollen
lands on the stigma of the same flower or another flower of the same plant, it is called self-
[Link] the pollen of a flower lands on the stigma of a flower of a different plant of the
same kind, it is called cross pollination. The cell which results after fusion of the gametes is
called a zygote. The process of fusion of male and female gametes (to form a zygote) is called
fertilisation. The zygote develops into an embryo.
i) Pollen grains have a _____________ protective coat which prevents the pollen grain
form_______________.

22 March is celebrated as the world water day. We celebrate water day every year to attract
the attention of everybody towards the importance of conserving water. The amount of water
recommended by the United Nations for drinking, washing, cooking and maintaining proper
hygiene is a minimum of 50 litre per person per day. This amount is about two and a half
buckets of water per person per day.
In some places there is an acute shortage of water. Taps running dry, long queues for water,
fights, marches and protests for demand of water have become a common sight, especially
during summers. Year 2003 was observed as the International Year of Freshwater to make
