Reflection Questions

The experiment aimed to slow the melting of ice using an insulated container made from household materials. Decisions were based on thermal principles, utilizing a towel for insulation and aluminum foil for heat reflection. The layered insulation was effective, although small gaps limited its efficiency, highlighting the importance of evidence-based design in engineering.

After completing your experiment, reflect to answer the following:

● What was the challenge or goal of your experiment?

The goal of my experiment was to slow the melting of ice by designing an insulated
container using household materials
● What decisions did you make and why?

I chose to use a towel and aluminum foil to insulate a plastic cup containing ice. The towel
was used because it traps air and reduces heat transfer, while aluminum foil was added to
reflect heat and reduce convection

● What types of evidence guided your decisions?

My decisions were guided by basic thermal principles and prior knowledge that fabrics act
as insulators and foil reflects heat.

● What worked well, and what didn’t?

The layered insulation worked well, as the ice in the insulated cup melted slower than
without [Link] limitation was that small gaps between layers may have allowed heat
to enter

● What did you learn about engineering thinking?

I learned that engineering involves testing ideas, making design choices based on
evidence, and improving solutions
