10 Performance Task

Students are tasked with creating a 3D model of DNA using various materials, demonstrating the double helix structure, sugar-phosphate backbone, and correct base pairing. Presentations will require explanations of the model's components, the importance of base pairing, and the role of DNA in protein synthesis. The project will be scored based on model quality, presentation clarity, and overall preparedness.

PERFORMANCE TASK: “Create & Explain: DNA Double Helix Model”

Subject: Science 10 – Quarter 3

Topic: DNA & Protein Synthesis
Due Date: Thursday (Presentation Day)
Type: Group of 5 (student’s choice)

TASK INSTRUCTIONS (for students)

You will create a simple 3D model of DNA using any available materials at home, such as:

 Paper (colored or plain)

 Straws

 Yarn / string

 Toothpicks

 Bottle caps

 Sticks

 Clay (optional)

 Recycled materials

 ANYTHING available — creativity is encouraged.

Your DNA model must show:

1. Double helix (twisted ladder shape)

2. Sugar-phosphate backbone

3. Base pairs:

o Adenine (A)

o Thymine (T)

o Cytosine (C)

o Guanine (G)

4. Correct pairing:

o A↔T

o C↔G

5. Labels (handwritten or attached tags are fine)

🎤 THURSDAY PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS

Each student / group will present their model for 2–3 minutes and answer the following:

1. What does your DNA model show?

(Explain the parts: backbone, bases, pairing)

2. Why is base pairing important?

(Relates to accurate protein synthesis)

3. How does DNA help the body make proteins?

(Mention transcription & translation at a basic level)

4. What materials did you use and why?

(Shows creativity & resourcefulness)
