English Modifiers Study Guide

1. What are Modifiers?

Definition: A modifier is a word, phrase, or clause that provides information about another
word in a sentence. Essentially, they add detail, context, and description, making sentences
more interesting and precise. They answer questions like Which one? What kind? How
much? When? Where? and How?
Usage and Placement:
• Placement Matters: Modifiers should generally be placed as close as possible to the word
they are intended to modify. Misplaced modifiers can lead to confusing or nonsensical
sentences.
• Essential vs. Non-Essential:
• Essential (Restrictive) Modifiers: Necessary to the meaning of the noun they describe (e.g.,
The student who studied passed the test.). They are not set off by commas.
• Non-Essential (Non-Restrictive) Modifiers: Provide extra information that can be removed
without changing the core meaning (e.g., Sarah, who is a gifted artist, drew a portrait.). They
are set off by commas.
2. Types of Modifiers
The three primary parts of speech used as single-word modifiers are adjectives, adverbs, and
nouns.

A. ADJECTIVES as Modifiers
Adjectives are words that modify nouns or pronouns. They typically describe the quality,
quantity, or state of the word they modify.

How to Use: Place the adjective directly before the noun it modifies (e.g., red car). In
predicative position, they follow a linking verb (e.g., The car is red).

B. ADVERBS as Modifiers
Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They primarily describe
how, when, where, or to what extent an action occurs or a quality exists.
How to Use: Placement is flexible, but often adverbs end in -ly and are placed near the verb
they modify, or before the adjective/adverb they modify.

C. NOUNS as Modifiers (Attributive Nouns)

A noun acts as an adjective when it is placed directly before another noun to describe or
specify it. When a noun functions this way, it is called an attributive noun or noun adjunct.
How to Use: Place the noun modifier directly before the main noun. The noun modifier
usually remains in its singular form.
