Project

The Tepi Railway Connection Project involves constructing an 8 km railway line in Southwestern Ethiopia, characterized by rolling hills and coffee plantations. Key project requirements include a design speed of 160 km/h, double track broad gauge, and considerations for local agricultural land and stream crossings. The project will be executed in phases using Civil 3D, focusing on terrain modeling, horizontal and vertical alignment, and cross-sectional design.

PROJECT: Tepi Railway Connection Project

Section: Tepi - Mizan Railway Line

Length: 8 km

Site Context:

 Location: Southwestern Ethiopia, SNNPR Region

 Terrain: Rolling hills with coffee plantations
 Elevation range: 1200m to 1400m
 Climate: Tropical monsoon climate
 Major consideration: Coffee farming areas and settlements

Project Requirements:

1. Site Conditions

 Predominantly agricultural land

 Multiple stream crossings
 Moderate rainfall (annual 1500-2000mm)
 Consideration for local access roads
 Soil type: Predominantly red clay soil

2. Design Parameters

 Design speed: 160 km/h

 Double track broad gauge (1676mm)
 Maximum gradient: 1:100 (1%)
 Minimum curve radius: 2500m
 Track spacing: 5.3m

3. Project Deliverables using Civil 3D:

Phase 1: Initial Setup

 Import terrain data

 Create surface model
 Set up alignments

Phase 2: Horizontal Alignment

 Design main alignment avoiding steep slopes

 Include minimum 1 tunnels
 Design 1 viaducts
 Provide spiral transitions

Phase 3: Vertical Alignment

 Design profile maintaining maximum gradient

 Include vertical curves
 Consider drainage requirements
 Bridge and tunnel elevations

Phase 4: Cross Sections

 Standard railway formation width: 13.5m

 Ballast cushion: 300mm
 Sub-ballast: 150mm
 Side slopes: 1:2 in embankment, 1:1 in cutting
