Fish reproduce in various ways, including oviparity (laying eggs), viviparity (giving birth to live young), and ovoviviparity (eggs developing inside the body). Different strategies, such as demersal, adhesive, and pelagic egg deposition, help protect eggs and increase survival rates. Spawning frequency varies among species, influenced by their lifespan and environmental conditions.

Slide 25 – Fish Reproduction (Introduction)

“Now let’s talk about fish reproduction. Fish reproduce in different ways to ensure the survival of their
species. Some lay eggs, some give birth to live young, and others develop eggs inside their bodies before
hatching. These methods help fish survive in different environments such as freshwater, saltwater, and deep
seas.”

Slide 26 – Methods of Fish Reproduction

“There are three main methods of fish reproduction.
First is oviparity, where fish lay eggs and fertilization happens outside the body.
Second is viviparity, where fish give birth to live young.
Third is ovoviviparity, where eggs develop inside the body and hatch later. These methods help fish adapt and
increase survival.”

Slide 27 – Examples of Reproductive Methods

“For example, clownfish, cod, and tilapia reproduce by laying eggs, which is oviparity.
Guppies and bull sharks give birth to live young, which is viviparity.
Some sharks like the dogfish shark use ovoviviparity, where eggs develop inside the mother. This shows how
reproduction differs among fish.”

Slide 28 – Fertilization and Egg Development

“In most fish, fertilization happens externally, where eggs and sperm meet in the water. Many fish produce a
large number of eggs to increase survival. For example, a female cod can lay millions of eggs. In live-bearing
fish, fertilization and development happen inside the mother’s body.”

Slide 29 – Egg Deposition & Nurturing Strategies

“Fish use different strategies to protect their eggs.
Demersal eggs are laid on the ocean floor.
Adhesive eggs stick to plants or rocks.
Pelagic eggs float freely in open water.
Some fish like tilapia carry their eggs in their mouths. These strategies help protect the eggs and increase
survival.”

Slide 30 – Demersal Eggs vs. Pelagic Eggs

“Demersal eggs are laid at the bottom of the water and are often hidden for protection. Pelagic eggs float in
open water and are produced in large numbers because many may not survive. Both methods help fish adapt to
their environment.”

Slide 31 – Adhesive Eggs & Mouth Breeders

“Some fish lay adhesive eggs that stick to surfaces to prevent drifting. Others, like tilapia, practice mouth
brooding, where the parent carries the eggs in the mouth. This gives the eggs strong protection until they
hatch.”

Slide 32 – Spawning Frequency and Lifespan

“Most fish spawn once a year, while others can spawn many times. Salmon spawn only once and then die,
while fish like cod and tuna can spawn several times during their lifetime. Spawning patterns depend on
lifespan and environment.”

Slide 33 – What Is an Air Bladder?

“The air bladder, also called the swim bladder, is a gas-filled organ that helps fish control their buoyancy. It
allows fish to stay at a certain depth without much effort and also helps in sound production and detection.”
