Q1. A PN junction silicon diode has a reverse saturation current rating of 50nA
at 320C. What should be the value of the forward anode current for a forward
voltage drop of 0.5V?
Q2. The reverse recovery time for a diode is 3μsec. The rate of change of current
is 30A/ μsec. Determine the reverse recovery storage charge and the peak reverse
recovery current.
Q3. A single-phase, 230V, 1KW lamp load is connected across single-phase

Single-phase Full wave diode rectifier with R load and RL load
Q1. A DC motor draws a ripple free current from a single-phase AC supply of 230V, 50Hz
through a full bridge rectifier. If the motor resistance is 10Ω and the turns ratio of the supply
transformer is unity, determine (a) harmonic distortion factor (b) Input power factor (c)Average
diode current (d) RMS diode current
Q2. For the full wave bridge rectifier circuit given in Fig. 1, the AC source is 120V at 50 HZ,
R = 2Ω, L = 10mH, and Vdc = 80V. Assuming continuous current conduction mode, determine
the average power absorbed by the DC voltage source and power dissipated as heat by the
resistor.

Q3. A single-phase half wave rectifier is with a freewheeling diode and R-L load. The source
is 240V (RMS) at 60 Hz and R = 8Ω.

the RMS input voltage of 120V. Determine the effect of the reverse recovery time on the

Single-phase controlled converter with R load and RL load
Q1. A single phase fully controlled bridge is supplied at 120V. If there is a voltage drop of 1.5
V across each thyristor, then determine the average load voltage for firing delay angles of 00,
450 and 900. Assume continuous and ripple free load current. Also determine the firing angle
at which the average load voltage will be equal to zero. Find the peak inverse voltage of the
thyristor.
Q2. A single phase fully controlled converter is fed from a 230V, 50HZ single-phase supply
mains and is feeding an RLE load. The load current is constant at 15 A. Given R = 0.5Ω, L =
0.3H find (a) firing angle, if E = 100V (b) firing angle, if E = -100V.
Q3. A highly inductive D.C. motor requires 12A at 150V from a single-phase A.C. supply.
Design the voltage and current of the transformer, if the rectification is done through a
controlled bridge converter. Assume each thyristor to have a forward voltage drop of 0.7 V.
Find the transformer turns ratio if the primary of the transformer is provided with 240V. Find
PIV of the thyristor and also average and RMS current through the thyristor at firing angle 00.
Q4. A single-phase half controlled symmetrical bridge converter is fed from 120V, 50Hz
supply. Neglecting voltage drop across the devices, determine average and RMS voltage at
firing angles 00, 600, 900, 1350 and 1800. If the load is highly inductive taking 25A at 00
triggering determine the required device ratings.
Q5. An asymmetrical half-controlled bridge converter is fed from 230V, 50Hz supply. If the
load current is continuous and ripple free, draw the output voltage, diode current and thyristor
current waveforms at 900 firing angles. Calculate the average and RMS device currents with
respect to the average load current at this triggering angle.
Q6. A centre-tapped fully controlled converter is supplied at 120V line to neutral. Determine
the mean load voltage for firing angles of 00, 300, 600, and 900, assuming load current to be
continuous and ripple free with a constant 1.5V drop on each thyristor.

Three-phase controlled Rectifier and DC-DC converter
Q1. A three phase fully controlled bridge converter is used for charging a battery with an EMF
of 110V and an internal resistance of 0.2Ω. A large inductor is connected in series with the
load to maintain constant charging current of 10A, (i) (a) Assuming ideal condition to all
thyristors, compute the firing angle for AC line voltage of 220V (b) If each thyristor has a
voltage drop of 2V across them, compute the firing angle. (ii) (a) For the purpose of delivering
power of 1.1kW from the battery to the 3-phase system the converter firing angle is increased
to 1500. Assuming ideal condition of thyristors and for the same value of DC average current
of 10A, compute the peak AC line voltage.
Q2. A 3-phase halfwave fully controlled converter is fed from 3-phase AC RMS line voltage
of 400V, 50Hz source and is connected to a load taking a constant current of 36A. Thyristors
have a voltage drop of 1.4 V (a) Calculate average value of load voltage for a firing angle of
300 and 600. (b) determine average and RMS current ratings as well as PIV of Thyristors (c)
find the average power loss in each thyristor.
Q3. A 3-phase full wave fully controlled bridge converter operating from a 3 phase 220 V
(RMS line voltage), 50Hz supply and is used to charge a battery bank with nominal voltage of
240 V. The battery bank has an internal resistance of 0.01 Ω and the battery bank voltage varies
by ± 10% around its nominal value between fully charged and uncharged condition. Assuming
continuous conduction and the battery bank is charged with a constant average charging current
of 100 A through a high value lossless inductor find out the range of firing angle of the
converter.
Q4. A DC chopper has a resistive load of R = 10 Ω and the input voltage is 220V. When the
chopper switch remains on, its voltage drop is Vch = 2V and the chopping frequency is f = 1kHz.
If the duty cycle is 50% determine (a) average output voltage (b) RMS output voltage (c) the

Q1. Design a buck converter for the following specifications, Vs = 22.5V, Vo = 18V, R load =
10Ω output voltage ripple factor <= 0.5%. Assume continuous inductor current. Specify duty
ratio, values of L and C for a switching frequency of 40kHz. Assume safety factor to retain
continuous mode of operation is 1.25 times
Q2. In a buck converter Rload = 5Ω, L = 10mH, f = 1kHz, Vs = 100V, D = 0.5, then determine
(i) DC component of the load current (ii) Peak to peak ripple current (iii) If the frequency is
increased to 4kHz how will the ripple current magnitude be affected (iv) If rather than changing
frequency the load inductance is increased to 40mH then what percentage will be ripple
current?
Q3. A DC to DC converter is operated by an IGBT with supply voltage of 480V and R load =
4.8Ω making it continuous current mode of operation. The average output power at the load is
30KW with non-inverted load voltage. What type of converter is used? For switching
frequency of 1kHz for the IGBT. Determine the ON time of IGBT? Calculate Rcr, ILMAX and
ILMIN if L = 50mH.
Q4. Design a buck converter for telecommunication power supplies which requires high current
and low voltage. For a 3.3V of input supply an output voltage of 1.2 V is obtained. For an input
average current of 2.2A, switching frequency of 500KHz and a peak to peak variations for the
inductor current not exceeding 40 percentage of the average inductor current, determine the
value of inductor and capacitor filter used. Consider a safety factor of 1.6 and output voltage
ripple factor of 2%.

Q1. A boost converter has an input voltage of 20V and output voltage of 50 V. The switching
frequency is 25 kHz. The inductor L is 200 μH and load resistance is 20 Ω. Assuming
continuous current mode, calculate,

(b) Average value of input and output currents
(c) Inductor peak to peak ripple current
(d) Minimum and maximum value of inductor current
(e) Filter capacitor ripple voltage if C = 400 μF.
Q2. A boost converter is required to have an output of 8V and supply a load current of 1A. The
input voltage varies from 2.7 to 4.2V. A control circuit adjusts the duty ratio to keep the output
voltage constant. The switching frequency is given as 200kHz. Determine the value of the
inductor such that the variations in inductor current is no more than 40% of the average inductor
current for all operating conditions. Determine the value of an ideal capacitor such that the
output voltage ripple is no more than 2%.
Q3. For a boost converter, design and derive the expression for L and C values such that it will
give an output voltage of 30V for an input voltage of 12V. Given load resistance of RLoad =50
Ω; output voltage ripple factor ≤1 % with a switching frequency of 25KHz. Assume continuous
inductor current with a safety factor of 1.25.
Q4. In a boost converter the duty ratio is adjusted to regulate the output voltage at 48V. the
input voltage varies in a wide range from 12 to 36V. The maximum output is 120W. The
switching frequency is 50kHz. Calculate the maximum L value that can be used so that the
converter operates in a discontinuous current conduction mode. Derive the equation of output
voltage at discontinuous current mode operation and check the input supply to maintain the
