10. Number of chromosomes in the female gamete = 24
Number of chromosomes in the zygote = 48
11. According to Ten Percent law, transfer of energy from one trophic level to other trophic level
is never 100 percent. It is so because most of energy gets lost as heat in the environment
during each transfer.
On an average, about 10% of energy is actually available to the next trophic level. In the
following food chain 20J of energy was available to the hawks, so according to ten percent
law 20 kJ energy would have been present in the plants.
12. P- Afferent Arteriole
Q- Efferent Arteriole
The cross-sections of these two structures are variable so that a pressure of blood is created
in the bowman’s capsule under which the process of ultrafiltration takes place.
13. Auxin hormone promotes growth. Cytokinin promotes cell division.
OR
Cyton or cell body of neuron contains a central nucleus and cytoplasm with characteristic
deeply stained particles called Nissl’s granules. Axon is single generally long efferent process
of neuron which conducts impulse away from cyton to other neuron.
14. Energy flow in an ecosystem is always unidirectional. There is unidirectional flow of energy
from sun to producer and subsequently to series of different types of consumers.
The energy passed from producer to herbivores does not go back to producer, so its flow is
always unidirectional.

16. (a) Inhalation is intake of fresh air from outside into the alveoli of the lungs.
It occurs by expansion of lungs which is brought about by enlargement of thoracic
F2 Generation
cavity. Inhalation involves the following steps –
The diaphragm (a dome shaped, muscular structure that separates thoracic cavity
from abdominal chamber) contracts so that the diaphragm lowers down and
becomes flat.
External intercostal muscles contract so that the ribs and sternum are pulled
upward and outward. This causes enlargement of thoracic cavity resulting in the
expansion of lungs.
Expansion of lungs reduces the pressure of air inside so that the fresh air is pulled
from outside into the lungs passing through nostrils, trachea and bronchi.
(b) Aquatic plants can carry out gaseous exchange by diffusion over their whole surface.
OR
(a) When we are injured and start bleeding, the loss of blood from the system has to be
minimized. In addition, leakage would lead to a loss of pressure which would reduce
the efficiency of the pumping system. To avoid this, the blood has platelets which
circulate around the body and plug these leaks by helping to clot the blood at these
points of injury.
Blood clot: Injured tissue + blood platelets releases thromboplastin that forms enzyme
prothrombinase.

OR
(i) Tap water contains ions which conduct electricity. Distilled water does not contain ions.
(ii) Dry HCl does not produce ions but dilute HCl gives H+ (aq.) and Cl–(aq.).
(iii) Baking soda does not allow milk to change into lactic acid, which makes milk sour.
(iv) Diluting an acid is highly exothermic. Water should not be added to concentrated acid
because the heat generated may cause the mixture to splash out and cause burns. Thus,
acid is added to water.
(v) Curd and sour substance contain acid which react with copper and brass to form certain
salts that are poisonous in nature and can cause food poisoning.
28. (i) pH is inversely proportional to the hydrogen ion concentration.
(ii) The decreasing order of H+ concentration is
Tomato juice > Pure water > Sea water > Milk of magnesia
OR
(iii) The solution of pH 2 is acidic in nature. So, the colour change is
Methyl orange : red; phenolphthalein : colourless

30. Option (1)
When a point source of light is placed at the focus of a concave mirror [or convex lens], the light
rays emerge out as a parallel beam after reflection [or refraction] through mirror (or lens).
31. Option (4)
Resistivity of metal wire depends upon its nature, not upon its dimensions

33. (a)
I. The incident beam of light after refraction through glass slab emerges out parallel to the
incident beam but laterally shifted. But no dispersion takes place in this case.
II. The incident beam of light after refraction through prism splits into a band of seven
colours which are violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red (VIBGYOR). These
coloured rays emerge out of the prism along different directions and become distinct.
Therefore, dispersion of white light takes place.
III. When the incident white beam passes through the first prism, it gets splitted into the
band of seven colours. But those coloured rays are incident on an identical inverted
prism. Then, recombination of the coloured rays takes place to form a white light beam.
Thus, emergent light beam is parallel to the incident beam but slightly shifted outwards.
(b) From above observations, the emergent beams in case I and case III are similar.

(iii) Different colours of white light bend through different angles with respect to the
incident beam of light due to difference in speed of light of different wavelengths.

(b) Element of heating devices are made up of alloys because the resistivity [Hence, the
resistance] of an alloy is greater than that of its constituent materials and greater
resistance leads to more production of heat when electric current flows in the circuit.
37. (i) Resistivity will not change as it depends on the nature of the material of the conductor.

(c) It will return back and retrace its earlier path.
(d) ‘The law of refraction’ is also known as ‘Snell's Law’.
OR
Lateral displacement is the perpendicular shift of light ray from its original path after
passing through parallel sided transparent medium like glass slab.
39. (i) Fleming's left hand rule: The direction of force on a current-carrying conductor is
given by Fleming’s left-hand rule. According to this rule, ‘stretch the thumb, forefinger
and central finger of your left hand such that they are mutually perpendicular. If the
fore finger points in the direction of magnetic field and the central finger in the
direction of current, then the thumb will point in the direction of motion of conductor
or the force acting on the conductor.’
Fig. Fleming's left-hand rule
(ii) Using Fleming’s left-hand rule, we can determine the direction of the magnetic field
acting on the electron.
W E
We know that the charge on an electron is negative. When the electron moves upward,
the direction of the current is in the opposite direction; that is, direction of the current
is downwards. It is given that the force acting on the electron is in the south direction.
Therefore, the direction of the magnetic field is towards the east.
(iii)
In each separate circuit, different devices can be connected across the live and neutral
wires. Each device has a separate switch to ‘on’ or ‘off’ the flow of current through it.
OR
(i) Magnetic field lines can never intersect each other because if they intersect at a point,
magnetic field at that point will have two directions which is not possible. (If we put a
magnetic needle at such a point, it should point in two directions, that is impossible.)
(ii) Right hand thumb rule: ‘Imagine that you are holding a current-carrying straight
conductor in your right hand and the thumb is stretched along the direction of current,
then, your fingers will wrap around the conductor in the direction of the field lines of
the magnetic field’.
S
I
(iii) Magnetic field produced by a straight current carrying conductor depends upon
(a) Current : It is directly proportional to the current flowing through it.
(b) Distance from conductor : It is inversely proportional to the distance of the
conductor.
