NaPAP (Sodium Salt of Para Amino Phenol) -

Complete Interview Notes

STAGE-1: HYDROLYSIS SECTION

Raw Materials: Para Nitro Chloro Benzene (PNCB), Caustic Lye (NaOH), Water

Reaction: Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution

Chemical Reaction: PNCB + NaOH → NaPNP + NaCl

Operating Conditions: 158–164°C, High Pressure, Continuous Agitation

Objective: Replace Cl group with OH group to form Sodium Para Nitro Phenoxide

Key Control: Temperature control, Pressure safety, Proper agitation

STAGE-2: HYDROGENATION SECTION

Raw Materials: NaPNP, Hydrogen Gas, Nickel Catalyst

Reaction: Reduction of Nitro (-NO2) to Amino (-NH2)

Chemical Reaction: NaPNP + 3H2 → NaPAP

Operating Conditions: 90–110°C, 3–6 kg/cm² Hydrogen Pressure

Safety: Hydrogen leak test, Explosion prevention, Catalyst handling

STAGE-3: NEUTRALIZATION & CRYSTALLIZATION

Chemicals Used: HCl, EDTA, CAT-1

Purpose: pH adjustment and crystal formation

pH Maintain: 6.5 – 7.0

Cooling required for proper crystallization

EDTA removes metal impurities

FINAL STEP: Cooling & Transfer to Stage-II

Product cooled and sent for filtration/drying

Used further in Paracetamol manufacturing

IMPORTANT SAFETY POINTS

PPE mandatory, Pressure Relief Valve check, Caustic handling care, HCl handling precautions

FLOW DIAGRAM EXPLANATION SCRIPT (Interview Speaking Format)

First, PNCB, NaOH and water are charged into hydrolysis reactor.

Temperature maintained at 158–164°C to form NaPNP.

Then mass transferred to hydrogenation reactor.

Hydrogen gas introduced with catalyst at 90–110°C.

Nitro group reduced to amino group forming NaPAP.

Then mass sent to crystallizer.

HCl added for neutralization, pH maintained 6.5–7.

Cooling done to form crystals.

Final product transferred to next stage.
