Introduction to Research
• What is research?
• Why do we do and need to do research?
• Basic concept of a researcher
• How do you do research?
• Some Examples
4
What is research?
Research is the systematic and scientific method of finding
solution to a problem.
Systematic means that to solve a problem by adopting a
particular process (scientific method).
5
What is research?
• Focusing on a small and deep problem.
• Trying to solve the problem by using
appropriate tools with original algorithms.
• Testing the originality in order to evaluate the
performance.
• Discussing about trade-off.

8
Why do we do or need to do research ?
• Our country needs thinking
function/researchers/Problem Solver/Sustainable
Solutions
• Man has to think out originality
• Copying may destroy the country
• A man with research and analysis functions can
work as a leader or a manager of any projects
9
Basic concept of a researcher
• A researcher may try to select the real problem
without prior knowledge
• Do not believe any thing easily
• Selecting the most appropriate tools
• Being able to create his/her own idea
• Knowing how to prove and evaluate the idea
• Discussing for trade-off
10
How do you do research ?

the field, research problem/objective, scope of study,
Literature Review and Basic idea.
Method System/Flow chats/Graphs and Processes
Results and Analysis of data
discussion Interpretation of results and findings
Conclusion Significant of your results, Suggestions and
recommendations
14
How do you do research ?
Plan Do Check Action (PDCA)
• To confirm idea, raise the theme of experiments or
simulations.
• Turn PDCA by planning, doing the experiments or
simulations, checking, having action to improve.
• Repeat PDCA.
15
Assignment#1
Group discussion
• Select your research area/field
• Identify problems in daily life
• Proposed Basic Idea/solution
16
Choosing a Topic
• Your motivation
• Previous examples of research project
• The size of your topic
• The time you have available
• The cost of research
• The resources that you have available
• Your need for support
• Access issue
• Method of researching
17
What to do if you can’t think of a topic
• Ask your supervisor, manager and friends
• Look at previous research works
• Develop some of your previous research or
your practice at work
• Think of a title and Start from the quote
• Draw yourself a picture or diagram
• Just start anywhere but be prepared to change direction
18
Your Supervisor
• To be supervised
• To read their work well in advance
• To be able when needed
• To be friendly, open and supportive
• To be constructively critical
• To have a good knowledge of their research area
• Relatively easy to exchange ideas
• To have sufficient interest in student’s research to put
more information to the students
• To help students get a good job at the end of it all
