CASE STUDY BASED QUESTION:
BANKING OF ROADS
The maximum permissible velocity with which a vehicle can go round a level curved
road without skidding depends on µ, the coefficient of friction between the tyres and the
road. The value of µ decreases when road is smooth or tyres of the vehicle are worn out or
the road is wet and so on. Thus force of friction is not a reliable source for providing the
required centripetal force to the vehicle. A safer course of action would be to do the ‘banking’
of such roads.

edge is called banking of roads

CASE STUDY BASED QUESTION:
Suppose an amount of heat ΔQ supplied to a substance changes its temperature from T
to T + ΔT.

We define heat capacity of a substance to be 𝐶 = 𝛥𝑇
We expect ΔQ and, therefore, heat capacity C to be proportional to the mass of the
substance. Further, it could also depend on the temperature, i.e., a different amount of
heat may be needed for a unit rise in temperature at different temperatures. To define a
constant characteristic of the substance and independent of its amount, we divide C by
the mass of the substance m in kg s is known as the specific heat capacity of the
