 ABOUT

The DJFMH-Human Milk Bank is one of the

pioneer and fully operational human milk bank
in the country providing services that aims to
recruit and screen donors, collect, process
and distribute donated human milk to those
babies in need whose own mother’s milk are
not available. Collected donor human milk
were pasteurized and dispensed to those
babies in need of pasteurized donor milk
based on the recipients’ prioritization criteria.

Since its establishment, the

awareness and demand for the use of
pasteurized donor milk has increased.
About 95% of pasteurized donor milk
has been provided to recipients from
different government and private
hospitals all over Metro Manila in
Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Only
5% of the pasteurized donor human
milk is given to babies at the NICU,
Rooming-in and Pediatrics of the
hospital.

The Human Milk Bank does not only

provide milk for babies who are sick,
but extends the service to infants who
are victims of calamities. It has
donated 82 liters of pasteurized donor
milk to victims of typhoon stricken
areas like Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan
City and Davao Oriental, Compostela
Valley and Tacloban. The Human Milk
Bank unit also serve as a facility for
the immersion of school of midwifery,
a showcase for visitors (local and
foreign) and other students. It is also a
venue for the practicum during the
Lactation Management Trainings of
the National Nutrition Council and
Department of Health. In 2012, being
one of the pioneer milk banks, the
Department of Health (DOH)
designated DJFMH as the training
institution on Human Milk Banking and
Breastmilk Storage. DJFMH-HMB has
spearheaded the conduct of the ten
batches of trainings funded by the
DOH in coordination with the
Philippine Committee on Human Milk
Bank.
