Slab Design Typed

The document outlines the design of a one-way slab measuring 12.5' × 27.5' with a specified concrete strength of 3 ksi and steel yield strength of 40 ksi. It details calculations for effective depth, loads, moments, required reinforcement, and spacing for both main and temperature/shrinkage steel. The final recommendations include using #4 bars at 6.5 in spacing for main reinforcement and #3 bars at 9 in spacing for temperature and shrinkage steel.

Slab Design

Size: 12.5' × 27.5'

Beam width: 9 in

f'c = 3 ksi

fy = 40 ksi

1. CHECK FOR SLAB TYPE

L/w = 27.5 / 12.5 = 2.2 > 2

Therefore: One-way slab

2. DEPTH OF SLAB

Clear span, Ln = 11 ft

Approximate effective depth:

d ≈ (Ln/20) [0.4 + fy/100,000] × 12

d ≈ 5 in

3. LOADS AND MOMENT

Self-weight of slab:

(5/12) × 150 = 62.5 psf

Floor finish = 30 psf

Live load (LL) = 40 psf

Total dead load (DL):

62.5 + 30 = 92.5 psf

D.L =50 + 30 + 62.5 = 142.5 psf

Factored load:

Wu = 1.2DL + 1.6LL

Wu = 1.2(142.5) + 1.6(40) = 235 psf

Per foot width:

Wu = 235 lb/ft

Mu = Wu L^2 / 8

Mu = (235 × 12^2) / 8 lb-ft

Mu = (235 × 144) / 8 = 4230 lb-ft

Convert to k-in:

Mu = 4230 × 12 / 1000 = 50.76 k-in

STEP #04

Effective depth:

d = h - 1 in = 5 - 1 = 4 in

R = Mu / (φ b d^2)

R = 50.76 / [0.9 × 12 × (4)^2]

R = 0.294 ksi = 294 psi

Reinforcement ratio:

ρ = (0.85 f'c / fy) [1 - sqrt(1 - 2R/(0.85 f'c))]

ρ ≈ 0.0071

Required steel area:

As = ρ b d

As = 0.0071 × 12 × 4 = 0.34 in^2

Spacing suggestion:

Use #4 bars @ 6.5 in c/c for main reinforcement

STEP #05 – MINIMUM REINFORCEMENT

As,min = 0.002 × Ag = 0.002 × (12 × 5)

As,min = 0.144 in^2

Temperature and shrinkage steel:

Use #3 bars @ 9 in c/c

As ≈ 0.15 in^2

SPACING SUMMARY

Top reinforcement: 12 in spacing

Bottom reinforcement in bay: 10 in spacing

Slab thickness = 5 in

Clear span = 11 ft

Beam width = 9 in & Bar sizes used: #4 and #3
