Fraction work sheet
What is fraction?
Fractions represent the parts of a whole or collection of objects. A fraction has
two parts. The number on the top of the line is called the numerator. It tells how
many equal parts of the whole or collection are taken. The number below the
line is called the denominator. It shows the total number of equal parts the
whole is divided into or the total number of the same objects in a collection.
Types of Fractions
The primary parts of a fraction are the numerator and the denominator. Based
on these, different types of fractions can be defined. Let us look at some
common types of fractions.
Operations of fraction
1- Addition:
Same Denominator: If the fractions have the same denominator, siply a
dd the numerators and keep the denominator the same. For exmple:
2/4 + 4/4 = 6/4
Different Denominators: If the fractions have different denominators,
find a common denominator (usually the least common multiple of the d
enominators), convert the fractions to equivalent fractions, and then ad
d the numerators. For example:
¼ + 1/6 =
The least common multiple of 4 and 6 is 12.
¼ = 3/12 and 1/6 = 2/12
3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12
2- Subtraction of Fractions
Same Denominator: Similar to addition, if the fractions have the same
denominator, subtract the numerators and keep the denominator the
same. For example:
4/8 – 1/8 = 3/8
Different Denominators: Find a common denominator, convert the
fractions, and then subtract the numerators. For example:
3/5 – 1/10
The least common multiple of 5 and 10 is 10.
Convert to 6/10 and 1/10
6/10 – 1/10 = 5/10
Multiplication of Fraction: To multiply fractions, multiply the
numerators together and the denominators together. For example:
4/3 × 2/5 = 8/15
Division of Fractions: To divide fractions, multiply by the reciprocal of
the second fraction. For example:
4/3 ÷ 2/5 4×2 and 5×3
8/15
Drawing a fraction:
Fraction can be represented in shapes, for example
Equivalent fractions
are different fractions that represent the same value or part of a whole,
achieved by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the
same number.
Fraction of Amount:
A fraction of an amount refers to a part of a whole, expressed as a ratio,
to find a fraction of an amount, divide by the denominator and multiply
by the numerator. Example
4/5 of 30% =
30/5= 6 6×4 = 24
