DESIGN STATEMENT

This airport proposal adopts a contextual and symbolic design approach rooted in
Tuguegarao’s distinct climate, geography, and cultural identity. The scheme integrates
functional efficiency with regional storytelling, using spatial elements that evoke movement,
light, and local heritage. Inspired by the city's reputation for intense heat and radiant skies,
the design employs sun-responsive materials, shaded circulation paths, and open-air
transitions that reflect both environmental sensitivity and architectural clarity. The concept is
deeply appropriate for Tuguegarao, a city known for its blazing summers, riverine networks,
and linguistic diversity.
The terminal’s layout responds to these conditions by incorporating passive cooling
strategies, maximizing cross-ventilation, and referencing local forms such as woven textures
and vernacular rooflines. Symbolic gestures—such as the use of “sinag” (ray of light) in
spatial orientation and signage—reinforce the city’s identity as a radiant gateway to the north.
Indigenous language integration, particularly Ibanag and Itawit, is embedded in wayfinding
and cultural exhibits, affirming the airport’s role as both infrastructure and cultural interface.
Site analysis revealed key constraints and opportunities: proximity to flood-prone zones, solar
exposure, and community access routes.
These findings informed the placement of elevated walkways, modular waiting areas,
and flexible arrival zones. The design also responds to the need for inclusive mobility, with
BP 344-compliant ramps, wheelchair slots, and tactile guides embedded throughout the
terminal. The scheme addresses several pressing challenges: it streamlines passenger flow
through intuitive zoning, reduces heat stress via shaded corridors and breathable materials,
and enhances regional pride through curated cultural elements. By balancing operational
logic with symbolic resonance, the design transforms the airport into a civic landmark—one
that welcomes, guides, and reflects the spirit of Tuguegarao.
