Comparator with zero and non- zero reference using op-amp
Aim: To test using Comparator with zero and non- zero reference using op-amp circuits.
Components required: op -amp (741), resistors-10KΩ, DC&AC power source, VCC, VEE, Ground, CRO.
Theory: An operational amplifier is a high-gain differential amplifier. The output depends on the difference
between the non-inverting (+) and inverting (−) terminals.
The important features are:
Zero Reference Non-Inverting Amplifier
Input is applied to the non-inverting terminal.
Inverting terminal is connected to ground.
Output is in phase with the input.
Gain:
Zero Reference Inverting Amplifier
Input is applied to the inverting terminal.
Non-inverting terminal is grounded.
Output is 180° out of phase with input.
Gain:
Non-Zero Reference Non-Inverting Amplifier
Input applied to the inverting terminal.
A DC reference voltage is applied to the non-inverting terminal.
Output is shifted above or below zero depending on reference voltage.
Non-Zero Reference Inverting Amplifier
AC input is applied to the non-inverting terminal.
DC reference is applied to the inverting terminal.
Output is inverted and shifted according to the reference voltage.
Procedure:
1. Open Multisim.
2. Place the 741 op-amp from the component library.
3. Connect:
Pin 7 → +12 V
Pin 4 → −12 V
4. Place AC source, DC source, 10 kΩ resistor, and ground.
5. Connect components as per the required configuration.
6. Connect the oscilloscope:
Channel A → Input
Channel B → Output
7. Set AC source parameters (Vrms, frequency).
8. Run the simulation.
Result: The simulated 741 op-amp circuits in Multisim produced amplified outputs with correct phase and DC
level shift, matching the theoretical behavior for zero and non-zero reference inverting and non-inverting
configurations.
