In the previous lesson, we learned
about the current state of
Information and Communication
Technology, or ICT, in a global setting.
There are various online platforms
and sites that people use today as
their medium of communication and
source of information. This
communication technology spreads
fast among people and even controls
their lives.
Despite the good benefits given to us
by technology, there are still things
that we must be aware of.

In this lesson, we will discuss and give


importance to online safety, security,
ethics, and etiquette.
Online Safety
Most of us are connected to the internet via
laptops, mobile phones, tablets, personal
computers, and other electronic gadgets.
Behind this technology, there is a risk that
everyone should be aware of. You could be
at risk of scams, bullying, and illegal
activities if you do not take precautions;
thus, we need to keep ourselves safe and
secure whenever we use the internet.

That is why it is very important to know and


learn the ways on how to be safe and how
to be secured online.

Online Security

Accessing sites on the internet can leave


information about yourself. Liking a
photo, commenting on a thread, or
following someone on social media can be
used against you if you are not careful.
Internet Threats

MALWARE – malicious software

• Virus. A malicious software program is loaded


into a user’s computer without their knowledge
and performs malicious actions. It can be
transferred from one computer to another
through the internet, local networks, or data
storage devices like flash drives.

• Worm. Stand-alone malicious programs that can


self-replicate and propagate via computer
networks with human help.
Ex. ILOVEYOU worm (Love Bug Worm) created by a
Filipino
• Trojan. A malicious program that is
disguised as a useful program but
once downloaded or installed,
leaves your PC unprotected and
allows hackers to get your
information.
Ex. Rouge Security Software- tricks
the user into posing that it is a
security software. It asks the user to
pay to improve his/her security but in
reality, they are not protected at all.
• Spyware. A program that runs in
the background without you
knowing it (thus called “spy”). It
can monitor what you are
currently doing and typing
through keylogging.
Ex. Keyloggers – used to record the
keystroke done by the users. Done to
steal passwords or any sensitive
information.
• Adware. A program designed to
send you advertisements, mostly
as pop-ups.
• SPAM – unwanted email, mostly
from bots or advertisers. It can be
used to send malware.

• PHISHING – Its goal is to acquire


sensitive personal information like
passwords and credit card details.

Pharming – a more complicated way of


phising where it exploits the DNS
(Domain Name Service) system.

observed in social or official life.

Netiquette
- It is a word that came from the two words “internet” and
“etiquette”.
- It is a “set of rules” for behaving properly online. It
governs what conduct is socially acceptable in an online or
digital situation.

method in collecting and gathering

PERFORMANCE TASK 1:
CYBER NEWS REPORT
Form groups with 3 members each. Research for several
news and events related to cybercrime. Using your
mobile phone or camera, report it as if you were a
newscaster. Present in a minimum of 1 minute and a
maximum of 2 minutes.
