ENME 341 - Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics

Problem Set # 2
Instructor: Dr. Paul Ziadé

Question 1
Water flows through the blades of the pump shown in the figure and exits uniformly at a speed of 10 ft/s. Determine
the flowrate in the pump.

Answers: Q = 1.885 f t3 /s

Question 2
If the pump in Q1 was rotating at 300 rpm and the water flow remained as shown when viewed by an observer rotating
with the blades, would the flow rate be changed? What would the magnitude of the velocity be to a stationary observer?
Answers: v = 28, f t/s (magnitude relative to a fixed observer)

1
Question 3
The flow in a 1m wide channel is initially uniform at V m/s with depth 0.23 m. After a hydraulic jump, the downstream
flow has a depth of 0.30 m and the velocity profile is U = 1.33y − 2y 2 where U is in m/s and y in m. Find V .
Answers: v = 0.182m/s

Question 4
A water jet pump involves a jet cross-sectional area of 0.01 m2 , and a jet velocity of 30 m/s. The jet is surrounded by
entrained water. The cross-sectional area associated with the jet and entrained streams is 0.075 m2 . These two fluid
streams leave the pump thoroughly mixed with an average velocity of 6 m/s through a cross-sectional area of 0.075 m2 .
Determine the pumping rate (i.e., the entrained fluid flowrate) involved in L/s.

Answers: Q =150 L/s

Question 5
The fluid axial velocities shown in the figure below are the average velocities measured in ft/s in each annular area of a
duct. Find the volume flowrate for the flowing fluid.

Answers: Q = 0.825f t3 /s

Question 6
Find the net force acting on the flow in Q2.

2
Question 7
A water jet leaves a fixed nozzle with a velocity of 10 m/s. The jet diameter is 10 cm. A 30o cone is pushed into the
water jet at a speed of 5m/s. The water impinges on the cone with the jet axis and the cone axis in perfect alignment so
that the water is divided evenly by the cone. Bernoulli’s equation suggest that because the pressure on the jet boundary
is constant, the water velocity relative to the cone surface is constant. Determine the thickness of the water stream
when it reaches the base of the cone.

Answers: δ = 2.08cm

Question 8
Determine the force exerted by the water on the cone in Q7.
Answers: F =61 N (right)

Question 9
Find the horizontal and vertical forces to hold stationary the nozzle as shown in the figure. The fluid flowing through it
is 10o C liquid water; A1 = 1m2 , A2 = 0.25 m2 , V1 = 20 m/s, p1 = atmospheric pressure + 30 kPa, and p2 = atmospheric
pressure.

Answers: Fx = 1.17 × 106 N Fy = 1.60 × 106 N

3
Question 10
Explain why the force F holding the plate in place is independent of the values of the velocities V2 and V3 ?

Question 11
Find the force on the flow in Q10. You can assume the plate is surrounded by atmospheric pressure and that the pressure
in the initial jet (with velocity V1 ) is also atmospheric. Answers: F = 106 N

Question 12
Find the pressure change p2 − p1 for the jet pump shown. Assume the velocity of the water at 20o C is Vs upstream of
the injector.

Answers: p2 − p1 =-503 Pa

4
Should be p1*A1 - p2*A2

(p1-p2)A2

p1-p2

p1-p2 So, p2-p1 = 503 Pa
