includes air quality and access to daylight and views, pleasant acoustic conditions, and
occupant control over lighting and thermal comfort.

Acoustics Comfort

The controlling of noise in and around buildings is essential. Isolation between Building elements depends upon the
following factors:

1. Junction between the separating wall/floor

2. Mass of flanking elements

3. Transmission through floor voids, loft spaces, service ducts, mullions and similar paths.
Whole Building Performance
Whole Building Performance

The Whole Building Performance (WBP) Method provides a flexible approach to meeting building standards by
evaluating overall performance rather than following strict predefined requirements. It applies to various building
types and ensures compliance by meeting key performance criteria while maintaining essential efficiency and
sustainability standards.

Annual Energy Consumption of a Building

Annual energy use for the WBP Method shall be calculated in kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year per unit area using an
energy simulation program and the project's climatic data.

Note: The annual energy use calculation as per the Whole Building Performance Method and PES achieved for
ECSBC + or Super ECSBC building is not a prediction of the actual energy use or saving of the building respectively,
once it gets operational.

ECSBC-R (ENS)
INTRODUCTION

• The Energy Conservation & Sustainable Building Codes for Residential Buildings (ENS) 2023

integrates previous codes (ENS-2018; Part-1 & ENS-2021; Part-2) and introduces measures

for sustainable site planning, water conservation, waste management, and indoor

environmental quality, aiming for low carbon footprints and healthy living environments.

• The residential sector's energy demand has been rising, with significant increases in

appliance ownership and cooling needs. The ECO NIWAS SAMHITA 2023 code addresses

these challenges by setting standards for energy efficiency and sustainability in residential

buildings. It includes provisions for renewable energy integration, efficient water

management, and improved indoor environmental quality to ensure that residential

buildings contribute to national energy conservation goals.

ECSBC-R (ENS) [Contd.]
ECSBC-R (ENS) [Contd.]

a) Cooling loads in Commercial buildings are usually dominated by

functional loads; while in residential buildings the same is

dominated by heat gains by the envelope as exposed envelope

b) Maximum occupancy of Residential buildings during the night

warrants greater role of natural ventilation.

c) Greater relevance of adaptive thermal comfort in Residential

SUSTAINABLE SITES

✅ Site Preservation

• Tree Protection: Existing mature trees must be protected or preserved according to

local bylaws. If trees are felled or transplanted, compensatory planting at a 1:3 ratio is

required.

• Topsoil Preservation: Fertile topsoil (150-200 mm) must be preserved and reused.

• Infrastructure Protection: Construction should not hinder existing water bodies, power

lines, or sewerage lines.

✅ Universal Accessibility

• Residential buildings must be accessible to children, the elderly, and differently-abled

individuals, following the Model Building Bylaws, 2016.

ECSBC-R (ENS) [Contd.]
SUSTAINABLE SITES

✅ Landscaping

• Vegetated Areas: Develop vegetated areas on at least 20% of the total landscaped

area.

• Turf Grass Limitation: Turf grasses should not exceed 30% of the landscaped area.

• Native Plants: At least 30% of the area must be planted with native species.

• Tree Planting: For plots over 5000 sqm, plant one tree per 80 sqm to ensure at

least 10% of the plot area is under tree cover.

✅ Mitigating Urban Heat Island

• Paved Area Limitation: Limit paved areas to 25% of the site.

• Pervious Paving: Use pervious paving for more than 50% of the paved area.

Where:
Aopenable: openable area (m2) &
Acarpet: Carpet Area of dwelling units (m2)

1. Visible Light Transmittance (VLT): Glass in non-opaque components must meet minimum VLT requirements

based on Window-to-Wall ratio.

3. Residential Envelope Transmittance Value (RETV): Must comply with a maximum RETV of 15 W/m² for specified

climate zones.

4. Transmittance for Cold Climate (Uenvelope, Cold): Maximum value is 1.8 W/m²·K.
ECSBC-R (ENS) [Contd.]

B. Residential Envelope Transmittance Value (RETV): Must comply with a maximum RETV of 15 W/m² for specified
