Group Project

The project focuses on biodiversity conservation of flora through a group visit to a botanical garden that houses threatened plant species. It aims to educate participants about the importance of plant biodiversity, identify endangered species, and promote conservation efforts. The findings emphasize the critical role of botanical gardens in preserving plant diversity and the collective responsibility of individuals and communities in conservation efforts.

GROUP PROJECT

.
1. Name of the Activity:
Biodiversity Conservation of Flora

2. Type of Activity: Group Activity

(Visit to a botanical garden harbouring threatened plant species)

3. Introduction.
Biodiversity refers to the wide variety of living organisms present on Earth, including plants,
animals and microorganisms. Among all living beings, plants play a very important role in
sustaining life. They provide oxygen, food, medicines, raw materials and help in maintaining
ecological balance. Forests, grasslands and wetlands depend largely on plant diversity for
their survival.
In recent years, human activities such as deforestation, urbanisation, industrialisation and
pollution have caused serious damage to plant life. Over-exploitation of natural resources and
climate change have resulted in many plant species becoming rare, endangered or
threatened. Loss of plant biodiversity directly a ects the survival of animals and humans.
Therefore, conservation of ora is essential to protect threatened plant species and to
preserve nature for future generations. Botanical gardens play an important role in conserving
plant biodiversity by protecting rare and endangered plants. This project focuses on studying
threatened plant species and understanding the need for their conservation.
4. Objectives of the Project:
•To study and understand the importance of plant biodiversity.
•To identify threatened plant species found in a botanical garden.
•To learn the common names, botanical names and families of these plants.
•To understand the various uses of plants in medicine, agriculture and daily life.
•To create awareness about the need for conservation of endangered plant species.
•To encourage students to protect and conserve plant biodiversity for future generations.
5. Methodology:
A group of ve students visited a nearby botanical garden that conserves various threatened
plant species. Before the visit, we discussed the purpose of the project and prepared a list of
points to be observed. During the visit, we carefully observed di erent plant species and
noted their characteristics. Information such as common name, botanical name, family and
uses of the plants was collected from plant labels, information boards and by interacting with
the garden sta . All observations were recorded systematically in a table for better
understanding and analysis.

7. Description of the Activity.
Biological diversity, also known as biodiversity, refers to the variety of life forms present on
Earth, including plants, animals and microorganisms. Plants form the basic foundation of all
ecosystems and play a vital role in supporting life. They provide food, oxygen, shelter,
medicine and raw materials for humans and animals. Plant diversity exists at di erent levels
such as genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity.
During the visit to the botanical garden, we observed many plant species that are rare,
endangered or threatened due to human activities. Factors such as deforestation, over-
exploitation, urbanisation, pollution and climate change have led to a rapid decline in plant
biodiversity. The botanical garden serves as an important centre for the conservation and
protection of these plants.
Through this activity, we gained knowledge about the importance of conserving ora and the
role of botanical gardens in protecting threatened plant species. The activity helped us
understand that conservation of plant biodiversity is essential for maintaining ecological
balance and ensuring the survival of future generations.
8. Suggestions / Conservation Measures.
• To conserve plant biodiversity, proper steps must be taken at individual, community and
government levels. Threatened and endangered plant species should be protected in their
natural habitats by controlling deforestation and over-exploitation of forest resources.
• Ex-situ conservation methods such as botanical gardens, seed banks and nurseries should

be promoted to preserve rare plant species. Awareness programmes, rallies and seminars
should be conducted to educate people about the importance of plant conservation.
Sustainable agricultural practices should be followed to reduce damage to natural vegetation.
Strict laws should be implemented to prevent illegal cutting of trees and destruction of forests.
Every individual should take responsibility to protect plants for a healthy and sustainable
future.
• Awareness programmes should be conducted in schools and colleges.
• Deforestation should be controlled and tree plantation should be promoted.
• Sustainable agricultural practices should be followed.
9. Conclusion:
The conservation of plant biodiversity is very important for maintaining ecological balance and
supporting life on Earth. Plants provide essential resources such as food, oxygen, medicines
and shelter for humans and animals. Due to deforestation, pollution, urbanisation and climate
change, many plant species have become threatened or endangered. Through this project and
the visit to the botanical garden, we learned about the importance of protecting threatened
plant species. Botanical gardens play a signi cant role in conserving rare plants and creating
awareness among people. Conservation of ora is not only the responsibility of the
government but also of every individual. By protecting plants today, we can ensure a healthy
and sustainable environment for future generations.
10. Learning Outcomes:
This activity helped us understand the importance of plant biodiversity and the need for
conserving threatened plant species. We learned to identify plants using their common and
botanical names and became aware of the role of botanical gardens in conservation.
