Control Relay Note

A control relay is an electromagnetic switch that uses a low-power control signal to manage a high-power circuit. It consists of several components including a coil, armature, and various contacts, and operates by magnetizing the coil to change the position of the contacts. Common applications include motor control panels, PLC panels, and industrial automation.

CONTROL RELAY – EXAM NOTE

Definition:
A control relay is an electromagnetic switch used to control a high-power circuit with a low-
power control signal.

Main Parts:
• Coil (electromagnet)
• Armature
• Normally Open (NO) contact
• Normally Closed (NC) contact
• Common terminal
• Spring
• Terminals

Working Principle:
When voltage is applied to the relay coil, it becomes magnetized and pulls the armature.
This changes the position of the contacts:
NO contact closes and NC contact opens.
When the coil is de-energized, the spring returns the contacts to normal state.

Applications:
• Motor control panels
• PLC panels
• Industrial automation
• Lighting control

Exam Tip:
In circuit diagrams, the relay coil and its contacts carry the same label (CR).
