Computer Awareness
1. Fundamentals & History
This is the "Introduc on 101" of compu ng. You need to understand how we got from giant room-sized machines to
the smartphone in your pocket.
Genera ons of Computers: Vacuum tubes vs. Transistors vs. ICs vs. Microprocessors.
Classifica ons: Worksta ons, Supercomputers, Mainframes, and Microcomputers.
Basic Architecture: The Von Neumann model (Input → Process → Output).
2. Computer Hardware & I/O Devices
Focus on the physical components and how they communicate.
The Motherboard: BIOS, CMOS, and expansion slots.
Input Devices: Beyond the mouse/keyboard—think scanners, OMR, BCR, and light pens.
Output Devices: Types of monitors (LCD, LED, OLED) and printers (Impact vs. Non-impact).
Memory Hierarchy: Cache memory, Primary (RAM/ROM), and Secondary (HDD, SSD, Magne c Tapes).
3. So ware & Opera ng Systems
This covers the "soul" of the machine.
System So ware: OS func ons, Kernels, and Device Drivers.
Applica on So ware: U lity so ware and open-source vs. proprietary so ware.
Opera ng Systems: Command Line (MS-DOS) vs. GUI (Windows, Linux, Android, iOS).
4. Computer Networking & The Internet
This is a high-yield area for RRB and SSC.
Network Types: PAN, LAN, MAN, WAN.
Topologies: Star, Mesh, Bus, Ring, and Tree.
OSI Model: The 7 layers (a favorite for slightly more technical shi s).
Internet Protocols: TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS, FTP, SMTP, and IP Addresses (IPv4 vs. IPv6).
5. Microso Office Suite
Expect prac cal, "how-to" ques ons here.
MS Word: Forma ng, Mail Merge, and Page Setup.
MS Excel: Formulas, Cell referencing, Pivot tables, and Charts.
MS PowerPoint: Slide transi ons, Anima ons, and Master slides.
Keyboard Shortcuts: Alt, Ctrl, and Shi combina ons are mandatory.
6. DBMS & Data Representa on
Database Basics: Tables, Keys (Primary, Foreign), and SQL basics.
Number Systems: Binary, Octal, Decimal, and Hexadecimal conversions.
Units of Measurement: Bit, Byte, KB, MB, GB, TB, PB (know the order!).
7. Cyber Security & Emerging Trends
Modern exams focus heavily on digital safety.
Malware: Viruses, Worms, Trojans, Ransomware, and Spyware.
Security Tools: Firewalls, An virus, and Encryp on.
Recent Trends: Cloud Compu ng, AI, IoT, and Blockchain basics.
