MTMHGEC02T/MTMGCOR02T – MATHEMATICS (GE2/DSC2) Time Allotted: 2 Hours | Full
Marks: 50
1. Answer any five questions from the following: (2 \times 5 = 10)
● (a) Test whether the equation (x^2 - ay)dx = (ax - y^2)dy is exact or not.
● (b) Find the integrating factor of the differential equation: (x^2 + y^2 + 2x)dx + 2y dy = 0.
● (c) Form the differential equation of the family of circles passing through the origin and
having centers on the x-axis.
● (d) Find the Wronskian of the functions y_1 = \sin x and y_2 = \cos x.
● (e) Find the complementary function (C.F.) of (D^2 - 4D + 4)y = e^{2x}.
● (f) Determine the order and degree of the partial differential equation (PDE):
\left(\frac{\partial^2 z}{\partial x^2}\right)^3 + \frac{\partial z}{\partial y} = x.
● (g) Eliminate the arbitrary constants a and b from z = ax + by + a^2 + b^2 to form a PDE.
● (h) Classify the PDE z_{xx} + 2z_{xy} + z_{yy} = 0 as parabolic, elliptic, or hyperbolic.
Answer any five questions from the rest: (8 \times 5 = 40)
2. (a) Solve: (x^2 y - 2xy^2)dx - (x^3 - 3x^2 y)dy = 0. (4 marks) (b) Solve the equation by
reducing it to Clairaut's form: y = 2px + y^2 p^3. (4 marks)
3. (a) Solve by the method of variation of parameters: \frac{d^2 y}{dx^2} + y = \sec x. (5 marks)
(b) Solve: \frac{d^2 y}{dx^2} - 3\frac{dy}{dx} + 2y = e^{3x}. (3 marks)
4. (a) Show that e^x and e^{2x} are linearly independent solutions of \frac{d^2 y}{dx^2} -
3\frac{dy}{dx} + 2y = 0. Find the unique solution satisfying y(0)=0, y'(0)=1. (5 marks) (b) Solve
the Cauchy-Euler equation: x^2 \frac{d^2 y}{dx^2} - 2x \frac{dy}{dx} + 2y = x^3. (3 marks)
5. (a) Solve the simultaneous equations: (5 marks)
\frac{dx}{dt} + 2y = \sin t, \quad \frac{dy}{dt} - 2x = \cos t
(b) Find the general solution of p^2 + q^2 = 1 using Charpit’s method. (3 marks)
6. (a) Solve the PDE by Lagrange’s method: (y^2 + z^2)p - xyq + xz = 0. (4 marks) (b) Verify the
condition of integrability for (y+z)dx + (z+x)dy + (x+y)dz = 0 and solve it. (4 marks)
7. (a) Form a PDE by eliminating the arbitrary function f from z = f(x^2 + y^2). (4 marks) (b)
Solve: \frac{d^2 y}{dx^2} + 4y = x \sin x. (4 marks)
8. (a) Find the orthogonal trajectories of the family of curves x^2 + y^2 = cx. (4 marks) (b) Solve:
x^2 p + y^2 q = z^2. (4 marks)
Instructions for Exam Preparation:
● Exact Equations: Focus on finding the integrating factor when the equation is not exact.
● Linear ODEs: Practice the method of variation of parameters and the symbolic operator
D = d/dx for Particular Integrals (P.I.).
● PDEs: Ensure you can distinguish between elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic equations
using the discriminant B^2 - 4AC.
