• PRINCIPAL REYES – Authoritative figure, values character
SCENE 1: WARM-UP
(Lights up bright. Strong instrumental music pulses. Alex and Ben pass the ball with deliberate rhythm – each
toss heavy with effort. Mia and Kara sit on the bench, leaning forward, eyes fixed on the court.)
MIA (Voice cuts through the music, sharp as a whistle)
HE’S STILL PLAYING VOLLEYBALL? AFTER EVERY SINGLE LOSS WE’VE WATCHED?
KARA (Laughs harshly, slamming a water bottle down)
BRAVE… OR STUPID. I DON’T KNOW WHICH IS WORSE – TRYING AND FAILING, OR REFUSING TO
SEE YOU’RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH!
(Alex’s hands fumble on the next pass. The ball hits the floor with a loud THUD. He stares at it a long moment
before picking it up.)
BEN (Grabs Alex’s shoulder, voice low and fierce)
DON’T YOU LISTEN TO THEM. NOT A WORD. FOCUS ON THE BALL – THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS.
ALEX (Voice cracks slightly, but holds steady)
HOW CAN I FOCUS WHEN EVERYONE IN THIS SCHOOL WAKES UP EXPECTING ME TO LET THEM
DOWN?!
(Ryan and Luke stride in, bouncing a ball so hard it echoes off the gym walls. They stop right in front of Alex
and Ben.)
RYAN (Smirks, tossing the ball high)
WELL, WELL. LOOKS LIKE WE’RE FACING THE SAME OLD LOSERS AGAIN. SOME THINGS NEVER
CHANGE.
LUKE (Pats Ryan’s shoulder, loud and mocking)
SAME OPPONENTS, SAME RESULT – THAT’S A GUARANTEE, RIGHT?
(Music dips but thrums underneath like a warning.)
SCENE 2: PRESSURE BUILDS
(Coach Ana marches onto the court – her footsteps heavy on the wood. Principal Reyes follows, standing at the
edge, arms crossed.)
COACH ANA (Voice booms across the gym, silencing chatter)
THIS MATCH IS NOT ABOUT WHO’S GOT MORE TALENT! IT’S NOT ABOUT WHO’S WON BEFORE!
IT’S ABOUT HEART – AND WHETHER YOU’VE GOT THE GUTS TO HOLD ON TO IT WHEN THINGS
GET TOUGH!
ALEX (Steps forward, jaw tight)
WHAT IF I DISAPPOINT YOU TOO, COACH? WHAT IF I LET THE WHOLE TEAM DOWN – AGAIN?
COACH ANA (Grips Alex’s shoulders, making him look her in the eye)
THEN YOU GET BACK UP. YOU WIPE THE DUST OFF YOUR KNEES. AND YOU TRY AGAIN. BECAUSE
FAILURE IS JUST PRACTICE FOR WHEN YOU FINALLY GET IT RIGHT!
PRINCIPAL REYES (Voice deep and commanding)
THIS IS A SCHOOL EVENT. I WILL NOT TOLERATE DISRESPECT – ON OR OFF THE COURT.
DISCIPLINE IS WHAT BUILDS CHAMPIONS.
MIA (Shouts from the bench, standing up)
RESPECT IS EARNED, PRINCIPAL! NOT GIVEN TO SOMEONE WHO CAN’T EVEN KEEP THE BALL IN
PLAY!
KARA (Stands beside Mia, chest puffed)
AND NOT EVERYONE DESERVES IT! SOME PEOPLE JUST WASTE EVERY CHANCE THEY GET!
COACH ANA
(Turns on them, voice like thunder)
ENOUGH! I’VE HEARD ENOUGH TALK. LET THE GAME SPEAK FOR ITSELF – AND WE’LL SEE WHO
DESERVES WHAT!
(Music swells with tension.)
SCENE 3: ANNOUNCEMENT
(Lexi runs to the center court, microphone in hand. Music shifts to a building, triumphant beat.)
LEXI
(Voice rings out, clear and powerful)
GOOD AFTERNOON, EVERYONE – AND WELCOME TO THE GYM! TODAY, WE SETTLE THIS RIVALRY
ONCE AND FOR ALL! THE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL MATCH IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!
(While she speaks, players move into position – feet sliding hard on the floor, hands clapping together with
purpose. No pauses, no gaps – the energy never drops.)
SCENE 4: MATCH BEGINS
(Energetic sports music blares. Players move in choreographed bursts – every pass, every dive is sharp and
deliberate. After the first rally, they FREEZE for 2 seconds, bodies taut like statues.)
RYAN (Steps up to Alex, grinning coldly)
READY TO LOSE, ALEX? READY TO SHOW EVERYONE WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW?
ALEX (Eyes locked on Ryan’s)
I’M NOT HERE TO LOSE. I’M HERE TO PLAY.
(First serve. Alex leaps – but his hand slips. The ball sails out of bounds with a sharp WHISTLE from the ref.)
KARA (Shouts loud enough to be heard over the crowd)
THERE IT IS! JUST LIKE WE SAID!
MIA (Voice heavy with what sounds like disappointment, not victory)
I KNEW IT… I KNEW HE COULDN’T DO IT!
(Music softens to a low, somber hum. Alex drops his head.)
ALEX (Voice thick with shame)
I MESSED UP. I LET US ALL DOWN.
BEN (Grabs the ball and tosses it to Alex, hard)
ONE MISTAKE! THAT’S ALL IT IS! ONE MISTAKE DOESN’T END THE MATCH – IT STARTS THE FIGHT
TO COME BACK!
(Coach Ana nods slowly, her gaze steady on Alex.)
SCENE 5: TURNING POINT
(A slow, heavy HEARTBEAT sound effect fills the gym. It gets louder with each beat.)
LEXI (Voice tense and urgent)
AND IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THIS – MATCH POINT!
(EVERYONE FREEZES for 3 seconds. Lights narrow to a single spot on Alex, who stands alone at the service
line. The heartbeat thunders in the silence.)
PRINCIPAL REYES
(Speaks low, but every word carries)
THIS IS WHERE SKILL STOPS MATTERING. THIS IS WHERE CHARACTER SHOWS.
(The heartbeat CUTS OFF abruptly. Total silence.)
ALEX
(Takes a deep, shaking breath – then steadies himself. Voice clear and strong)
ONE SERVE. JUST ONE CHANCE TO SHOW WHAT I CAN DO.
SCENE 6: ONE LUCKY SERVE
(Hopeful, soaring instrumental rises slowly. Alex steps back, eyes on the court. He moves in SLOW MOTION –
every muscle flexing with intent. He leaps, swings his arm…)
(The ball arcs through the air in slow motion. Then – FREEZE. The ball lands perfectly inside the line,
bouncing high before Ryan can reach it.)
BEN
(Bursts into a roar)
YOU DID IT! YOU ACTUALLY DID IT!
(Ryan and Luke stand frozen, mouths open. The crowd erupts.)
MIA
(Whispers first, then louder)
I… I DIDN’T EXPECT THAT. I NEVER THOUGHT HE COULD…
KARA
(Shakes her head, voice heavy with regret)
ME NEITHER. I WAS SO WRONG ABOUT HIM.
SCENE 7: RESOLUTION
(Music softens to a warm, gentle melody. All characters gather center court.)
COACH ANA
(Pats Alex on the back, voice full of pride)
THAT WASN’T LUCK, ALEX. THAT WAS WORK. THAT WAS COURAGE.
PRINCIPAL REYES
(Nods firmly, looking at all the students)
THAT WAS BELIEF – IN YOURSELF, AND IN WHAT YOU CAN DO WHEN YOU REFUSE TO GIVE UP.
(Alex walks over to Mia and Kara, holding the ball out.)
ALEX
(Voice steady and calm)
I JUST WANTED A CHANCE TO PROVE I COULD PLAY. THAT’S ALL I EVER WANTED.
MIA
(Takes the ball carefully, voice thick with emotion)
WE JUDGED YOU TOO QUICKLY. WE SAW YOUR FAILURES AND NEVER STOPPED TO SEE HOW
HARD YOU WERE TRYING. I’M SORRY.
KARA
(Puts a hand on Alex’s shoulder)
WE WERE WRONG. AND NEXT TIME – WHEN YOU PLAY AGAIN – WE’LL BE THE FIRST ONES
CHEERING FOR YOU.
(All players put their hands in a stack in the center. Music swells as they shout together.)
ALL TOGETHER! (Lights fade slowly as music plays out.)
