Science Fair Max

The document outlines an experiment to assess bacterial contamination on various surfaces and the effectiveness of different cleaning methods. The results indicated that the dirtiest surface was the palm of the hand, while 70% alcohol was the most effective cleaning method. The initial hypothesis regarding the toilet seat being the dirtiest was proven incorrect.

Surfaces Swabbed:

1. Empty dish (control)

2. Toilet Seat
3. Faucet handle
4. Eating surface
5. Bathroom door handle
6. Eating surface cleaned with water
7. Eating surface cleaned with dish detergent
8. Eating surface cleaned with white vinegar
9. Eating surface cleaned with 70% alcohol
10. Soiled hand
11. Hand cleaned with soap and water
12. Hand after touching door knob
Materials:
1. Cotton Swabs
2. Different surfaces
3. Agar
4. Oven
5. Water
6. Container
7. 12 petri dishes
8. White vinegar
9. 70% alcohol

Procedure:
1. Transfer the agar powder to a 16
oz container, and add distilled
water.
2. Mix it up with a spoon, and boil in
microwave.
3. Pour into petri dishes just enough
to fill the bottom, then wait a hour
to procede.
4. Use cottom swabs to swab
different surfaces.
5. Rub swab over agar a few times,
then put the lid back on.
6. Compare the bacteria on the petri
dishes
7. Autoclave and dispose the petri
dishes
Observations:
Not much bacteria was appearing in
the first 48 hours. But after 72 hours
significant amounts were starting to
appear.

Variables:
Independent: The surfaces
swabbed, and the different cleaning
methods.
Dependent: Amount of bacteria
on the petri dish after 72 hours.
Confounding: None
Data Collection:
Measure, collect and record my data
by taking pictures of the petri dish
and evaluate bacteria colonies on the
petri dish.

Results: The dirtiest surface was

the palm of my hand followed by my
hand after using soap and water then
the dirty eating surface. The best
cleaning metho was 70% alcohol.

Conclusion: My hopothesis on the

toilet seat being the dirties was
incorrect as my hand was the dirties.
My hypothesis on alcohol being the
best cleaning method was correct.
Question: Which common surface
contains the most bacteria?
Which cleaning method works the
best on a surface?

Hypothesis: I think the dirtiest

surface will be the toilet seat. And
alcohol will work the best on cleaning
the surface.
