IoT (25ECE0211)
Role of IoT and Digital Technologies in Modern Transportation
Safety
1. Introduction
Road safety has become one of India’s critical public concerns. With over 1.6 lakh road accidents
reported in 2024, India continues to face challenges such as overspeeding, rash driving, poor visibility,
driver fatigue, and lack of real-time monitoring. The year 2025 saw a rapid increase in the adoption of IoT
and digital systems to reduce accidents, improve traffic discipline, and enhance emergency response times.
IoT enables vehicles, roads, sensors, and traffic systems to communicate with each other, creating safer and
more intelligent mobility networks.
2. Significance of IoT in Transportation Safety
2.1 Driver Behaviour Monitoring
IoT sensors detect overspeeding, sudden braking, sharp turns, and driver fatigue. Alerts are sent instantly to
drivers and traffic control rooms.
2.2 Smart Traffic Junctions
Cameras and sensors estimate traffic density and automatically adjust signal timings, reducing congestion
near accident-prone points.
2.3 Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) Communication
Vehicles receive warnings such as:
Accident ahead
Fog on expressway
Roadblock or diversion
Overspeeding zone
2.4 Emergency Response Optimization
IoT systems automatically notify ambulances with exact GPS coordinates, reducing response time during
accidents.
2.5 Real-Time Road Condition Monitoring
Sensors detect potholes, road cracks, and slippery surfaces and send alerts to authorities.
3. Significance of Digital Transformation in Transportation
3
IoT (25ECE0211)
AI-enabled camera surveillance
Cloud-based accident prediction models
Digital maps with real-time hazard indicators
Mobile-based road safety apps
Centralized command & control centers
Automated challan systems
Digital transformation promotes data-driven decisions and improves overall traffic discipline in Indian
cities.
4. Role of IoT & Digital Systems in India (2025)
In 2025, several Indian states deployed smart transportation safety solutions:
Mumbai-Pune Expressway: Fog detection sensors + AI surveillance
Delhi-Jaipur Highway: Smart speed detection cameras
Bengaluru: IoT-based signal-free corridors
Noida & Delhi: Intelligent accident reporting through integrated control rooms
These advancements significantly reduced accidents and improved emergency response.
PART 2 — CASE STUDY
4
IoT (25ECE0211)
Case Study: IoT-Based Accident Prevention System on the Delhi–
Meerut Expressway (2025)
1. Background
The Delhi–Meerut Expressway is one of the busiest high-speed corridors. In early 2025, the National
Highways Authority of India (NHAI) reported a sudden spike in:
Overspeeding violations
Night-time accidents
Fog-related crashes
Lane indiscipline
To address this, NHAI implemented an IoT-enabled Accident Prevention System.
2. Story Patch — “The Foggy Morning Escape”
On a cold January morning in 2025, dense fog covered the expressway.
At 6:40 AM, Arjun, a software engineer traveling to Noida, could barely see 10 meters ahead.
Suddenly, his car dashboard beeped:
“Warning: Zero-visibility zone ahead. Reduce speed immediately.”
This alert came from the new IoT system installed on the expressway.
Sensors placed on smart poles detected fog density and transmitted the information to vehicles in real time.
A few minutes later, another alert appeared:
“Minor accident 400 meters ahead. Maintain lane.”
Because of these early warnings, Arjun slowed down safely and avoided a pile-up.
Later in the news, he learned that the IoT system prevented a major 12-vehicle accident that morning.
3. Impact of IoT on Accident Prevention
48% reduction in fog-related accidents
Faster ambulance dispatch using automatic GPS alerts
Smoother traffic despite low visibility
Overspeeding reduced due to live warnings
Fewer lane-changing collisions
4. Challenges Faced
5
IoT (25ECE0211)
High installation cost along highways
Need for stable network connectivity
Driver awareness about IoT alerts
Maintenance of roadside sensors
5. Benefits
Improved road safety
Reduced economic loss from accidents
Better traffic discipline
Higher confidence among daily commuters
PART 3 — APPLICATION
