I. Introduction
The Philippines is not only known for its beautiful places and delicious food, but also for
its coffee. Because of the country’s warm climate and mountainous areas, different types of coffee beans
grow well here, such as Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica or Kapeng Barako. These coffee beans have
unique flavors that reflect the place where they are grown.
In recent years, many local coffee brands in the Philippines have become popular. These
brands focus on using locally grown coffee beans and supporting Filipino farmers. From small coffee
roasters in the provinces to well-known coffee shops in the cities, local brands show the quality and
creativity of Filipino coffee makers. Each brand has its own story, taste, and style, which makes
Philippine coffee special.
Local coffee brands also help promote Filipino culture and local products. By choosing
local coffee, people help farmers earn a better living and encourage the growth of the local coffee
industry. Because of this, Philippine coffee is not just a drink, but also a symbol of hard work, tradition,
and pride of the Filipino people.
Spanish monks first brought coffee to the Philippines in 1740 in Lipa, which soon became
the country’s coffee capital. Production soon spread across the country and by the 1800s, coffee was
being exported to the USA via San Francisco and Europe via the Suez Canal.
By the late 1800s, the Philippines was the world’s fourth-largest coffee exporter. At one
point in the 19th century, it was the only source of coffee in the entire world when coffee rust destroyed
crops in Africa, Java, and Brazil. However, when coffee rust eventually reached the Philippines in the
early 1900s, it devastated the country’s coffee production. It destroyed almost all of the country’s coffee
plants, leading many producers to abandon the crop altogether. Production slowly recovered throughout
the 20th century, and in the 1950s, the Philippine government introduced a disease-resistant variety into
the country.
