Density Mini-Lab

The document outlines a Density Mini-Lab with specific learning goals related to the physical and chemical properties of elements and compounds. It includes detailed instructions for four lab stations where students measure mass and volume to calculate density for sand, rock, an unknown liquid, and an unknown solid. Each station has criteria for assessment, including observations of student behavior and completion of calculations.

Density Mini-Lab Total Score: _____ / 32

Learning Goals:

Describe the physical and chemical properties of elements and compounds (C2.6)

Observations & Conversations: [TI /5]

o Student remained with lab group for the entire mini-lab without the need for teacher reminders.
o Student stayed on task and completed all lab stations without the need for reminders to stay on task.
o Student moved between stations in an orderly manner only when instructed by the teacher to do so.
o Student treated all specimens with care and followed all safety procedures.
o Student demonstrated an understanding of learning goals and success criteria for this lab.

STATION 1: Density of Sand [ / 6 total]

1) Determine the mass of ONLY the sand.

DO NOT POUR THE SAND DIRECTLY ONTO THE PAN OF THE SCALE! Use the “TARE” function to zero the scale after
you have placed the empty graduated cylinder on it instead!

Mass of sand: ____________________________ [TI /1]

2) Pour the sand into a graduated cylinder to determine its volume. _______________________ [TI /1]

3) Calculate the density of the sand. Show your calculations below.

 Include the formula you used. [TI, COM /4]

 Include the values you added to the formula.
 Include a problem statement with the appropriate number of significant figures and the correct units.

4) Return the sand to the paper cup and tidy your station.
STATION 2: Density of Rock [ /6 total]

1) Find the mass of the rock. _________________________ [TI /1]

2) Use the principle of displacement to determine the volume of the rock. __________________ [TI /1]

3) Calculate the density of the rock. Show your calculations below. [TI, COM /4]
 Include the formula you used.
 Include the values you added to the formula.
 Include a problem statement with the appropriate number of significant figures and the correct units.

4) Pour the water into the sink and leave the rock at your station.

STATION 3: Density of an Unknown Liquid [ /7 total]

1) Place an empty graduated cylinder on the scale and press TARE to zero the scale.
2) Pour 25 mL of the unknown liquid into the graduated cylinder.
3) Determine the mass of the liquid. Record it here: ________________________________ [TI /1]
4) Calculate the density of the unknown liquid. Show your calculations below:
 Include the formula you used.
 Include the values you added to the formula
 Include a problem statement with the appropriate number of significant figures and the correct units.
[TI, COM /4]

5) Pour the unknown liquid into the sink and tidy your lab station.

6) Use Table 1 below to identify the unknown liquid.

STATION 4: Density of an Unknown Solid [ /8 total]

1) Determine the mass of the cube: ______________________ [TI /1]

2) Using the ruler, measure the length, width, and height of the cube. _____________________ [TI /1]

3) Calculate the volume of the cube in cm3. Show your work below. [TI /1]
