During our one-month internship at SMEC, we were assigned to various departments, which enabled us to
familiarize ourselves with the company’s operations and its strategic approach to addressing challenges in a
highly competitive market.

The main objective of this study is to understand the functioning of various departments within SMEC and
to examine its corporate culture, management practices, and strategic decisions. The internship was
undertaken to gain in-depth knowledge about the organization—its vision, mission, goals, and objectives—
while also exploring how different departments contribute to achieving these organizational aims.

The study further focuses on analyzing SMEC’s business operations, pricing, and marketing strategies,
along with its overall management approach. The company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and
threats are assessed through a SWOT analysis, while the political, economic, social, technological,
environmental, and legal factors influencing its operations are examined using a PESTEL analysis. These
analyses together provide insights that support effective planning and decision-making within the
organization.

1.2 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

• To understand the functioning and operational processes of SMEC,


including its organizational structure, authority, responsibilities, and
internal relationships.

• To evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of SMEC.

• To conduct a PESTEL analysis of SMEC’s business environment in order to identify


key factors that influence the company’s operations.

1.3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The study followed a descriptive and historical research approach using secondary data
collected from SMEC’s official records, website, reports, and valuable insights obtained from
current employees to understand the company’s operations and practices.

SCHEME OF THE INTERNSHIP

The first chapter of the report includes an introduction to the study, its objectives, and limitations.

The second chapter presents the company profile, service profile, organizational structure,

departmental functions and responsibilities, along with details on competition, financial position, and

marketing strategies.

The third chapter focuses on the SWOT analysis of the organization.

The fourth chapter provides information related to the PESTEL analysis.

The fifth chapter contains the observations of the study, a critical evaluation of these observations, and

a summary of the key findings, suggestions, and conclusions.

Main Engine Control System

The main engine control system is first carefully observed to identify the issue, after
which the fault is located and corrected. The system, comprising electromechanical and
digital controls for start, stop, speed regulation, shutdown, slowdown, safety, and alarm
functions, is thoroughly repaired and tested to ensure proper operation.

Engine Order Telegraph Systems

The “Norm” type telegraph is designed for vessels with remote-controlled main engines or pitch propellers,

The engine room telegraphs are available in two sizes—192x192mm and 144x144mm—
designed according to DIN 43700 standards, featuring stainless steel housings with a
