MATHEMATICS IN THE
MODERN WORLD
Presented by Athena C. Morente
UNIT 1 PART 1: NATURE
OF MATHEMATICS
Learning Objectives
• Identify the patterns in nature and regularities in
the world,
• Argue about the nature of mathematics, what it is,
how it is expressed, represented and used;
• Appreciate the nature and uses of mathematics in
everyday life.
What is Mathematics?
• The study of the relationship among numbers,
quantities, and shapes.
• Enhances our critical thinking skills, reasoning,
spatial thinking and creativity.
• Helps organize patterns and regularities in the
world.
PATTERNS AND NUMBERS IN
NATURE AND THE WORLD
Patterns define as;
●Regular,
●Repeated,
●Recurring Forms, Designs or Events
PATTERNS AND NUMBERS IN
NATURE AND THE WORLD
●We see patterns everyday like the layout of floor tiles,
design of skyscrapers, to the way we tie our shoelace.
PATTERNS AND NUMBERS IN
NATURE AND THE WORLD
●Patterns help to identify relationships and finding
logical connections to form generalizations and make
predictions.
Patterns in nature are visible regular forms
found in the natural world. The patterns can
sometimes be modeled mathematically and
they include symmetries, trees, spirals,
meanders, waves, foams, tessellations, cracks
and stripes.
