Good morning class!
Before you take your seats kindly arrange your chair, pick up the trashes around your
area and remove all the unnecessary things that is not related to out discussion for
today!
May I call upon the secretary of this class, may I know who is the absent and excuse for
today?
Before we start to our new lesson, let’s have a recall about Monday’s lesson. Do you
remember the lesson that we have last discussion?
What is the formula for centripetal force?
Now, Let’s have a Vocabulary Sorting Game. All you need to do is analyze the
statements that represent the scrambled words, then unscramble them. Raise your
hand if you would like to answer.
Work or no work
For our activity, entitled work or no work. Who wants to read the instruction?
We have an example scenario here, stated that A person pushes a shopping cart across
the supermarket floor.
Based on the scenario there’s a work or no work?
Why this scenario is a work? Because there’s a displacement and motion.
1. The man applies a force to the plow, and the plow moves forward. Since force causes
displacement in the same direction, work is done.
2. . A woman whirling an object around a circle
No work (in the direction of motion)
Although force is applied, the force (centripetal force) is directed toward the center of
the circle, while the motion is tangential. Since the force is perpendicular to the
displacement, no work is done on the object.
3. A student pushes a box across the classroom floor
Work
The student applies force and the box moves in the same direction as the force.
Therefore, work is done.
4. An adult talking to someone over the phone
No work
There is no force causing physical displacement of an object. In Physics terms, no
mechanical work is done.
5. A skateboard rolling to a stop on a smooth surface
Work
Friction applies a force opposite to the direction of motion, causing the skateboard to
slow down and stop. Since force causes displacement (even though it reduces motion),
work is done (negative work).
Based on our activity, what is work?
How do we know if work is done by an object or a body?
There are different types of work;
Positive
- Man plowing a field
- A student pushes a box across the classroom floor.
Negative
- A skateboard slowing down due to friction
- Sliding a box across the floo
- Catching a ball
No work (force does not cause a displacement) or the force is perpendicular to the
displacement.
- Talking someone on the phone
- Whirling the object
To apply your idea about work let’s have a partner activity. You can answer the activity by
partner.
