Tutorial 1

The tutorial consists of four problems involving vector operations, mass calculations, gravitational forces, and distance from celestial bodies. It requires determining vector sums and differences, calculating the average mass and weight of apples, finding the distance from the sun where gravitational forces are balanced, and comparing forces exerted by the sun and earth on the moon. Each problem emphasizes the application of physical principles and calculations in both SI and U.S. units.

Tutorial: 1

1. For the given vectors V1 and V2, determine V1+V2, V1+V2, V1-V2, V1xV2, and V1.V2
consider the vectors to be non-dimensional.

2. The weight of one dozen apples is 5 lb. Determine the average mass of one apple in
both SI and U.S. units and the average weight of one apple in SI units. In the present
case, how applicable is the “rule of thumb” that an average apple weighs 1 N?

3. Calculate the distance d from the center of the sun at which a particle experiences
equal attractions from the earth and from the sun. The particle is restricted to the line
through the centers of the earth and the sun. Justify the two solutions physically.

4. Determine the ratio of the force exerted by the sun on the moon to that exerted by the
earth on the moon for position A of the moon. Repeat for moon position B
