Density SimActivity

The document outlines a lesson plan for exploring the concepts of density, floating, and sinking using a simulation. It includes learning objectives, activities for students to engage with the simulation, and methods for measuring mass and volume to calculate density. The plan encourages discussion, experimentation, and application of density principles through hands-on activities.

Exploring Floating and Sinking
Learning Objectives:
1) Describe how the concept of density relates to an object's mass and volume.
2) Explain how objects of similar mass can have differing volume, and how objects of similar
volume can have differing mass.
3) Explain why changing an object's mass or volume does not affect its density (ie, understand
density as an intensive property).
4) Measure the volume of an object by observing the amount of fluid it displaces.
5) Identify an unknown material by calculating its density and comparing to a table of known
densities.

1. Play around with the sim. (5 min)

What can you do? What happens? Talk about what you find with your partner.

7. Calculating Density (5min)
We can figure out the density of blocks using division if we know their volume and mass.
The equation is Density=Mass ÷ Volume. Let’s try this using the “Mystery”!
