Introduction
Adolescents frequently encounter peer pressure, especially in junior and senior high school. Peers have
a significant impact on kids' conduct, decision-making, academic achievement, and lifestyle choices
throughout this phase. Peer pressure, according to Santrock (2019), is the effect of a peer group that
pushes people to alter their beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors in order to blend in. Peer interactions grow
more significant during adolescence, a crucial developmental stage that frequently influences students'
decisions and behaviors (Steinberg, 2017).Peer pressure can lead to negative repercussions as well as
beneficial ones, such as inspiration, emotional support, and encouragement to accomplish academic
goals. According to Brown and Larson (2009), they include subpar academic achievement, risky
behavior, and elevated emotional stress. Even when the action goes against their personal beliefs or the
expectations of the school, students may be pressured to conform by negative peer pressure.
At General Mariano Alvarez Technical High School (GMATHS), senior high school students are at a stage
in their life where social acceptance is crucial. Students may follow their friends and occasionally
overlook their own convictions out of a desire to fit in and be liked. According to Kiran-Esen (2013),
some students may feel under pressure to participate in undesirable behaviors, ignore their studies, or
skip classes in order to be accepted by their peers. However, peers can also have a good impact by
promoting diligence, self-control, and self-assurance.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of peer pressure on senior high school students in
GMATHS, ascertain the kinds of peer pressure they encounter, and ascertain how these influences
impact their behavior, academic performance, and decision-making. The findings of this study will aid
educators, parents, and school administrators in comprehending the effects of peer pressure on senior
high school students and creating suitable interventions to favorably influence them.
Statement of the problem:
This study evaluates in knowing the effect of peer pressure and difficulties on Senior High School
students. Previous studies have shown that peer pressure affects students in many ways, like in decision
making, academic performance, and lifestyles. Peer pressure can be positive or negative, such as
motivation and support. Therefore, this study seeks to answer the following:
1. How does peer pressure influence a senior high school student?
2. How does the behavior of close friends affect a senior high school student’s lifestyle?
3. What are the effects of peer pressure on the lifestyle of a senior high school student?
4. Why can a friend have a huge effect on a senior high school student’s decisions?
5. Can peer pressure change a senior high school student’s negative perspective into a positive one?
Hypothesis
There is a significant effect on the behavior and decision-making of a senior high school who experiences
peer pressure. Senior high school students that is easily influnced by their peers is faced with challenges
that can affect their lifestyle.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on selected Senior High School students of General Mariano Alvarez Technical
Highschool during the School Year 2025-2026. The primary aim of this research is to determine the
effects of peer pressure on students’ behavior, decision-making, and academic performance. The
respondents of this study include students from different strands to obtain varied perspectives
regarding peer influence.
The scope of this study is limited to the data gathered through questionnaires answered by the selected
respondents. The results are based solely on the students’ honest responses and personal experiences.
This study does not include teachers, parents, or students from other schools.
Additionally, other factors that may affect students, such as family background, mental health, financial
status, and personal experiences outside the school environment, are not included in this research. The
study only represents the views of the respondents involved.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it aims to understand how peer pressure affects senior high school
students, particularly in their behavior, decision-making, and academic performance. By identifying both
the positive and negative effects of peer pressure, this research hopes to promote awareness among
students, teachers, parents, and school administrators. Understanding peer pressure is important
because it plays a major role in shaping students’ attitudes, actions, and personal development during
adolescence.
Students will benefit from this study by becoming more aware of how their peers influence their
choices and actions. Through this research, students may recognize the importance of thinking
independently and making responsible decisions. This may help them build self-confidence, resist
negative influences, and strengthen positive relationships with their peers.
Teachers may use the results of this study to better understand students’ struggles related to peer
pressure. The findings can help teachers identify students who may need guidance and support. This
study may also assist teachers in developing classroom strategies and activities that encourage positive
peer interaction and responsible behavior.
Parents may gain insight into their children’s experiences with peer pressure, allowing them to better
understand the challenges their children face in school. This awareness may encourage parents to
communicate more openly with their children, provide emotional support, and guide them in making
healthy choices.
School Administrators may use the findings of this study as a basis for creating programs, seminars, or
school policies that promote positive peer relationships and student well-being. The results may help
administrators improve guidance services and strengthen efforts to prevent negative peer influence
within the school community.
Future Researchers may use this study as a reference for related topics. The findings can serve as a
foundation for further research about peer pressure, student behavior, and adolescent development.
