Teleprinter Printing Techniques Explained

The document discusses different types of printers and how teleprinters work. It explains that printers can print to paper or tape. It then describes how a typewriter-style teleprinter works, using a type bar, bell crank, and printing hammer to print each character. It explains that teleprinters use a rotating code ring scanned by a feeler pawl to determine the correct character to print. Finally, it discusses teleprinter signaling speed in India of 50 bauds or 66.6 words per minute and how character transmission duration is calculated based on code element duration.

Printing technique

By BAR

By WHEEL

Printing hammer engages with the fallen bell crank & moves towards right. The bell crank drives type bar which prints the type on paper. It has both letter & figure shift.

Grooves & projections are made on the inner side of the code ring. Feeler pawl is made to scan interior of code ring.

Both feeler pawn & printing wheel rotates.

As feeler pawl encounters a continuous groove, its motion is arrested. Now appropriate type comes opposite the printing hammer & paper.

Speed of signaling.

Expressed in Bauds or WPM.

Teleprinter speed in india-50bauds or 66.6wpm.

Duration of code element=1/50 sec=20 msec. For 7.5 unit code, Duration of character =20*7.5= 150 msec. rpm of transmitter shaft= (1000*60)/150 =400 rpm
The receiver shaft rotates a little faster, approx 454.5 rpm.
