2:Example of rolling process analysis
Example:
A steel plate 20 mm thick in to be rolled to 14 mm in four high mill having roll diameter 480 mm. if yield stress is 12 kg/ (a) Angle of bite (b) Co efficient of friction if this is the maximum reduction possible. (c) Position of neutral section (d) Backward slip (e) Forward slip (f) Maximum pressure. determine:
Solution:
Ho = initial thickness of plate = 20 mm H1 = final thickness of plate = 14 mm. Draft, H = Ho H1 =20 14 =6 mm. R= radius of roll =480/2 =240 mm.
(a) To find angle of bite
H = 2R(1-cos) 6 = 2 x 240(1 - cos ) = 9
(b) To find coefficient of friction
= coefficient of friction = tan = tan 9 = 0.158 1
(c) To find position of neutral plane
n= L= = =37.94 mm n= =2
For neutral section
Px leading = px lagging = =
Hx = 15.3 mm
(d) To find backward slip
Backward slip
= =1 =1=1-
= 23.5%
Forward slip
= = = -1 1
-1
= 0.92%
To find maximum pressure
(px)m = maximum pressure
=16.46 kg/
