Understanding Basic Electricity Concepts

This document provides an overview of basic electricity concepts including: - The flow of electrons forms static and dynamic electricity which can come from man-made or natural sources as alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC). - Basic electric circuits require a source, path, and load for current to flow. Safety precautions when working with electricity include insulating yourself and turning off power sources when possible. - Circuit conditions include complete circuits which allow current flow, open circuits with a break, closed circuits without a break, short circuits which bypass the load, and overloads with excessive current causing overheating.

Basic Electricity

ELECTRICITY: The flow of electrons FORMS : Static and dynamic SOURCES : Man made and natural TYPES: AC and DC ELECTRICAL DEVICE: Single component ELECTRONIC DEVICE: Many components working together. Contains solid-state devices.

Basic Electricity
Atom
Electron: Neg. Charge Proton: Pos. Charge Neutron neutral or no charge

Basic circuits contain:

Source Path Load

Basic Electricity
Factors:
Lazy Takes the least path of resistance Likes to go to ground

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Human shock factor: Current can harm you Human senses Taste Smell Sight Hearing Touch

Basic Electricity Safety

Insulate your self.
Stand on a dry nonconductive surface.

Turn off power source when ever possible. Wear safety glasses. Use only one hand when working on live circuits. Avoid contact with a HOT lead. Remember electricity is LAZY. If your electricitys only path YOU will get SHOCKED. Keep the work area clean.

Basic Electricity Circuit Conditions

Complete circuit
Contains: source - path - load

Open circuit
No current flow - a break in the circuit

Closed circuit
Current flow complete circuit with no break

Basic Electricity Circuit Conditions

Short circuit
A circuit which current bypasses the load Maximum current will flow

Overload
Excessive current flow Circuit will become over heated
