Maximum Box Volume Graph Analysis

The document describes creating a graph from a table to visually show the maximum volume of a box. The graph shows the maximum volume is 66 cubic inches at a height of 1.5 inches. It also shows that the volume initially increases then decreases as the size of the cut-out square changes. The graph helped determine that a box 8 inches by 5.5 inches would have the maximum volume.

Graphing

I used the table to create a graph. The graph will visually show me what the maximum volume will be.

Box Volume
70 60 50 Volume (in ^ 3) 40 30 20 10 0 0 0.5 1 1.5 2 2.5 3 3.5 4 4.5 Height (inches)

The graph shows that the point (1.5, 66) is the maximum volume that the box can hold. The graph shows that as the size of the square you cut out increases, the volume of the box both increases and decreases. Because the point (1.5, 66) is the maximum point on the graph, I am now able to answer the question asked by the POW. The corresponding length and with that will result in a volume are: 8 in x 5.5 in. I can now visually see the gradual increase caused by the side of the square being cut out increasing. After the point (1.5, 66), the volume the box can hold gradually increases. Because the equation is cubic, some of the results are not plotted. This is because some of the points were negative, which is not real world.
