Source Learning Activities for Gospel Principles

Source learning activities allow young women to study, ponder, and respond to gospel teachings. Source learning activities provide a model which participants can draw upon in practice. This activity allows the learner to become the teacher as each participant contributes thoughts to the image that is created.

Source Learning

A structured sharing activity

Explanation The purpose of source learning activities is to allow each young woman to study, ponder, and respond to gospel teachings found in source materials, such as the scriptures, conference talks, or other printed media. Source learning activities build understanding of gospel principles. This understanding provides a model which participants can draw upon in practice. Example Activity - Graphic Design Choose four sources that explain a gospel principle. Combine sources where needed, such as scriptures, so that one set of sources takes about 3-5 minutes to read. Examples of source materials includes sections of conference talks, scriptures, stories from living prophets or church magazines. Divide participants into four teams and assign each team one of the four source materials (or groups of materials). Invite each team to study the materials with a particular question in mind. For example, What steps can we follow to increase our desire to serve others? At the end of four minutes, invite each team to create a graphic image like they would see in an advertisement, that communicates the principles theyve just studied. No words are allowed for this round. Allow four minutes for the groups to draw their images. Have each group select a spokesperson to present her groups image. An extension activity would be to pass the images to a new team and have them come up with a 6-word slogan to go with the image. Summary Source Learning is another example of a frame activity. The content is interchangeable. This activity allows participants to work in social groups around a shared challenge. It allows the learner to become the teacher as each participant contributes thoughts to the image that is created and as those images are presented to each other. Small groupings allow each participant to become engaged in the activity. As participants opens their minds to the topic and draw on their own understanding (or their own questions), they invite the Holy Ghost to testify and teach.
