Swiftlet ranching is a modern and commercialized way of producing birds nest as opposed to the traditional harvesting from caves. Swiftlet ranching is about attracting swiftlets to their new habitat, man-built building called swiftlet house. The swiftlets would then start breeding in the swiftlet house where, swiftlet pairs will build birds nests for this purpose. Birds nest is where swiftlets lay their eggs and hatch them. When the young swiftlets reach maturity to fly and live independently, they would leave their nests, leaving their nests ready to be harvested. This industry has brought in great fortune to many investors, and has contributed immensely to the foreign exchange in Malaysia. Swiftlet ranching started half a century ago in the Asean countries. Due to the lack of knowledge, investors luck was the prime factor in their success in this business venture. However, with the research on the habits and advancement in technology in recent decades, the success of an investment has greatly improved. Technology, skills, knowledge and experience in the field are essential ingredients of the success. The beauty of this swiftlet industry entails an one-off investment and following that, the monthly expenses is merely the water and electricity bill. The industry has a promising future. With an improving economy comes more affluent lifestyles and this in turn leads to an increased demand for health and nutritional supplements. In addition, the incorporation of bird nests in the beauty, skincare products and traditional Chinese medicine has further boost the demand of bird nests. The current demand for this commodity from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, India and the Middle Eastern countries is surging and the future of the bird nest industry looks more than promising. Currently, birds nest production has reached 375 tones with a retail value surpassing the RM1.5 billion mark. As there is still room for expansion and further improvement, the Government has ear-marked to systematically develop this industry under the 10th Malaysia Plan. The target has been set for100,000 bird houses with a total production of RM5 billion by 2015.
