Overview of Session Initiation Protocol

The document discusses the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and its benefits. SIP allows for scalable and easy to manage voice and multimedia applications over IP networks. It converges voice and data onto a single network, eliminating separate phone and data systems and reducing costs. SIP connects different internet-enabled devices and manages them with software that provides calling features. The paper will highlight how SIP functions with other IP protocols to enable sessions over IP networks.

ABSTRACT SIP-based applications are scalable and easy to manage. They are readily available, affordable and there are many to choose from. Developers are offering SMBs ones that include features to simplify communications and improve productivity. Deploying SIP offers additional savings because voice and data converge on one pipe, eliminating the cost of separate phone and data networks. SIP applications bridge the gap by connecting smartphones, soft-phones, computers and other IP-enabled devices, managing them with software that includes basic features like forwarding, busy or out-of-office responses and conference calling. In this paper, we have highlighted the basic technology involved in SIP and how it functions with a large number of these IP related protocols.

BACKGROUND AND SCOPE The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a signalling protocol used for establishing sessions in an IP network. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) has become a strong, catalytic force shaping today's telecom industry. SIP is a simple toolkit that service providers can use to build converged voice and multimedia services. This Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) driven protocol represents a key ingredient in the converging world of telecommunications based applications. SIP's main purpose is to help session originators deliver invitations to potential session participants wherever they may be.

HYPOTHESIS Clearly, SIP is an important protocol that is becoming widely deployed. SIP is a catalytic protocol that delivers key signaling elements, which can turn a voice over IP network into a true IP communications network - a network capable of delivering next generation converged services. SIP is powerful, and yet simple. Using SIP, telephony becomes another web application and integrates easily into other Internet services.
