Data Processing and Analysis Guide

The document discusses internal forces in beams and provides an example problem. It explains that beams are structural members designed to support loads perpendicular to their axes. Beams can have different support types. The document also states that designing beams requires determining the variation of internal shear force V and bending moment M along the beam axis. An example is given to sketch the shear force and bending moment diagrams and find the maximum bending moment.

ME13A: CHAPTER SEVEN

INTERNAL FORCES AND FORCES IN BEAMS

Internal Forces in Members

Internal Forces in Members Contd.

Example

Determine Reactions

Fx = 0

i.e. Ax = Bx Ay = - 780 N = 780 N

MB = 0 i.e. 0.3 Ay + 780 x 0.3 = 0;

Fy = 0 i.e. - Ay - 780 = By; i.e. - - 780 N - 780 N = By ie. By = 0

7.1 Shear and Bending Moment in a Beam

Beams are structural members which are designed to support loadings applied perpendicular to their axes. In general, beams are long straight bars having a constant cross-sectional area. They are classified as to how they are supported. See page 345 for types of supports of beams.

Shear and Bending Moment in a Beam Contd.

The design of a beam requires the determination of the variation of the internal shear force, V and bending moment M acting at each point along the axis of the beam.

Example

Sketch the shear force and the bending moment diagrams for the beam shown below. Determine the maximum bending moment.
