Fourier Series Problem Set 1

This document contains the first problem set for a graduate level mathematical methods course. It includes 6 problems related to Fourier series and Fourier analysis. The problems ask students to derive relationships between different Fourier representations, compute Fourier series for various functions, relate Fourier coefficients of functions to those of their derivatives, and determine the Fourier coefficients of the convolution of two functions.

Problem 2 (5 points): Compute the Fourier series of f (x) for a) f (x) = x, x [1, 1] b) f (x) = |x|, x [1, 1] Draw the periodic continuation of f on [3, 3], as well as the partial sums (Fourier series (1) truncated at N N), with N = 5, 20, 200. Problem 3 (5 points): Compute both complex and real representations of the Fourier series for f : [1, 1] R, f (x) := 1, x < 0 1, x 0. (4)

Draw the periodic continuation of f on [3, 3], as well as the partial sums for N = 5, 20, 200. Problem 4 (5 points): Let ak , bk denote the Fourier coecients of f , and let k , k denote the Fourier coecients of the derivative, f , on [1, 1].
