Christmas, Our Yule

In the United States many prepare for the Christmas season, or holiday season, which now is the more politically correct term. Pagans celebrate Yule. Yule, also known as the Winter Solstice, traditionally falls on Dec 21 and is celebrated between the 21st- 22nd. Yule is the Anglo-Saxon word for the festival of the Winter Solstice. It comes from the original 'Iul' meaning 'wheel'. In the old Almanacs, the symbol of a wheel was used to mark Yuletide. The idea behind this is that the year turns like a wheel -- the Wheel of Life, of which the spokes are the old Sabbat celebrations. The winter solstice, the rebirth of the Sun, is a particularly important turning point. The idea of holding a festival at the winter solstice to celebrate the rebirth of the Sun was so universal in the ancient world that the Christians adapted it. No one really knows for sure when Christ was born, but by holding this feast at midwinter, Christ was mystically identified with the Sun. The Romans celebrated the winter solstice with a festival called Saturnalia. The winter solstice takes place when the Sun enters the Sign of Capricorn; Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn, was also supposed to be the ruler of the far off Golden age of the past when the world was happy and fruitful. At this time of the year the Romans decked their houses with boughs of evergreen trees and bushes. People gave each other presents, and all normal business was suspended and social distinctions were

forgotten. Servants and slaves were given a feast by their masters who waited the tables. The evergreens for Yuletide decorations were holly, ivy, mistletoe, bay, rosemary, and the green branches of the box tree. By Candlemas, all these had to be gathered up and burnt, or - it was believed - hobgoblins would haunt the house. In other words, by the time a new tide of life had started to flow, people were to get rid of the past and look to the future. Spring cleaning was originally a nature ritual. In Wicca, Yule marks the death and rebirth of the Sun God. It also marks the defeat of the Holly King, god of the waning year, by the Oak King, god of the waxing year. Old mumming plays, which still exist in some places as part of the Yuletide festivities, are linked with the rebirth of the Sun. In these plays, Saint George in shining armor comes to do battle with the dark-faced Turkish Knight. Saint George is the sun, slaying the powers of darkness. However, the victor immediately proclaims that he has slain his brother. Dark and Light, winter and summer are complementary to each other. So on comes the mysterious 'Doctor' with his magical bottle who revives the slain man. There is much rejoicing and all ends well. There are other versions of this. In Ancient Egypt a ritual was performed in honor of Isis and her son Horus. Isis circled the shrine of Osiris seven times, to represent her mourning for him and her wanderings in search of the scattered parts of his body. For the festival, people decorated the outsides of their houses with oil lamps that burned all night. At midnight,

the priests emerged from an inner shrine crying, "The Virgin has brought forth! The light is waxing!" and showed the image of a baby to the worshippers.

The Crone

The Crone is called by many names: Hekate, Morrighan, Kali, and many more. The Crone is often misunderstood and, sadly, still feared. The word Crone means Wise Old Woman, Elder. There is a wisdom which comes by living life and learning from life; with time and age. It is the kind of wisdom books cannot give. There is a difference between educated and wise. There are many educated people, but not so many who are wise. The Crone is called the Unavoidable, the Mystery of Mysteries. It is believed that from Her, all things proceed,

and to Her, all things must return. From Her Cauldron, all life emerges. She is known as the Night Sky at the Darkest Moment of the Dark Moon and the Barren Earth at the Dead of Winter. Her names are Hecate, Cerridwen, Morrighan, Kali. She is known as Dark Demeter and her Darker Daughter, Persephone. She is known as the Unchanging Shape Changer; the Warrior; Siren; Midwife; Weaver; Dancer and Devourer; the Keeper of the Keys to all Magick; She is the Great Queen. She is the Hag. But not the ugly hag, rather the old feisty hag who is no BS. She is the Holy Terror toward those who play trivial games. She is the Crone. She commands respect. The Crone may be the single most difficult thing for one new to the Craft to comprehend. Early programming teaches us that 'dark' is 'evil', and that death is to be feared. We are told, as babies, that the night light in our room is there so we won't be 'afraid of the dark', telling us very plainly, of course, that if it were dark, we would have something to fear. We grow up with a deep-rooted fear of the dark and of the unknown, a fear that stubbornly refuses to be conquered even when we know, intellectually, that there is nothing to fear.

Coven Life

One of the covens I was in: Sisters of the Sacred Dragon Moon ******* I wrote this about a year ago, as I sat contemplating how often the word coven is used. The word Coven has lost its mystique, its mystery, and is used too commonly or, if I may, flippantly. Because of lack of understanding and teaching on truly what is a coven, many enter as if it is just another social

club and hence there are many issues both ways. There are many who take too flippantly the sacred Oath, and make light of initiation and ordeals. I also think so much has been added on the web there is not that awe or respect or element of surprise as once was. I think there needs to be balancing; yes, we need to educate (inform may be a better word) those seeking entrance into our circles as what we are about, what we expect, what you as a seeker can expect. I think it should be made clear, however, without going into details of all the inner workings although a seeker should be reassured secrecy is not all a bad thing. The word coven comes from covenant agreement based on an oath The word coven also implies those who have gathered as one based on a common Oath, and goal. What I enjoyed most when working in a coven, was the sisterhood, the sharing in magick, rituals, and outings. There was much laughter, and for a while it was good. Keep in mind coven life is not for all. It is ok to never have been in a coven. It really is.

Oracle of the Month

This is a card that speaks to me and us; it is the time to look to the Crone and Her wisdom. This is Her time of year. Take time to listen, embrace the silence. It may be a time for an initiation to the next level in your journey. Listen to the Raven; Raven comes with a message for you. Also this card, as I gaze at it again, calls me to rededicate to my Path, to my Goddess or Deity; to reaffirm my dedication to my craft. It is also good to look back to my roots and my foundation. Never forget your roots.

Mindfulness and Spiritual Awareness

Article II: Expectations and Assumptions

Belief is 'an acceptance that a statement is true or that something exists' without having experienced or seen it directly. Religion and other social institutions education, politics, the media - encourage a variety of beliefs, many that must be taken on blind faith, which is often endorsed as a 'virtue'. Most of us are able to adjust our thinking when a belief fails in the face of reality, but under some circumstances such an adjustment can be quite difficult. A number of folks I've spoken with over the years have shared that some of the largest obstacles they've encountered along their paths toward spiritual awareness arise because their experiences of spiritual reality seem to be in conflict with their beliefs (mostly of a religious nature). That was my struggle too when I was younger, and for many years I simply did not have the mental wherewithal to deal with it -- so much easier just to turn my back on it all. I think spiritual beliefs are harder to adjust than, say, assumptions about mundane reality (oh it's not aerodynamically impossible for bumblebees to fly? *shrug* go figure), and I think the reason is because of the extreme value placed on faith. Many religious teachings are presented in a way that suggests it's actually wrong to question them. Having learned to value and even cherish the trusting nature of one's relationship with God (or Allah or Source, etc), a whole mess of guilt can ride in on any questions that challenge any aspect of one's faith. When I was finally ready to explore my path, I found it helpful - no, necessary - to set aside all my prior beliefs as I began a meditative practice and entered my spiritual space. Given the many conflicting descriptions of spiritual reality, I figured if any of those descriptions were true, then they would be confirmed as I encountered them in spiritual reality. I also felt that if I entered spiritual space with expectations regarding what I would find there, my expectations could seriously skew the experience. I might try to make the experience fit my beliefs rather than simply experience what I found. Now that I've been on my path a while, occasionally I find that at some point I misinterpreted an experience, then drew conclusions from it, and - surprise! - I'm suddenly encountering an experience that is in conflict with my own beliefs. But that's not too hard; it just surprises me (what? I was wrong???). It's a lot easier to set aside my own erroneous conclusions than it ever was to set aside the teachings of, say the church. My point is not in any way intended as a criticism of religion. These articles are aimed toward those who seek clarity as they explore spiritual reality. Setting

aside all beliefs - including the ones that really make sense - is not about throwing anything away; it's about taking the opportunity to discern and experience what is real. This is a simple philosophy, that if one's beliefs are based in reality, one should find their confirmation in the course of exploring spiritual reality oneself. I wake up in the morning in my bed, a simple mattress and box-spring set, and I walk through the rooms of my home, which is a small, cluttered house constructed from man-made materials; I interact with my beloved and our cat companions, and we all live in a neighborhood of similar homes, each yard with its own trees and various forms of landscaping. Somewhere in the jungles of South America there's a woman who wakes up in the morning in her bed, animal hides piled atop straw, and she walks out the door of her one room dwelling, which is a tiny structure made of materials she has gathered from the surrounding jungle; she interacts with her loved ones, and they all live in an encampment surrounded by dense forest. Between the two of us, our descriptions of physical reality are - quite obviously - very, very different. I would be wrong to assume that this woman needs anything from me; for instance, it would be wrong to assume, because I myself wear shoes, that her lack of shoes is a problem for her. If she did need help and by some odd occurrence I was able to help her, I would be wrong to assume anything about her life or situation or that I could anticipate what it was that she actually needed. She could teach me a lot about her life and surroundings, and unless I could pack her up and take her home with me it would be nearly impossible for me to explain my life to her... and pretty presumptuous for me to assume she needed to know anything about me anyway. So why would I assume the spiritual reality that surrounds me is anything like the spiritual reality surrounding anyone else, or that it is my job to define spiritual reality for others on the basis of what I perceive? It's been enormously helpful to me in terms of expanding my awareness to listen and read about the experiences of others who are also spiritually aware. Sometimes we find similarities in our experiences, but we also often find vast differences. I think it would be wrong to assume that the differences are an indication that any one of us is more accurate than the others; we're just perceiving our individual surroundings. For me to describe spiritual reality in a way that was meant to define it for someone else would be akin to informing someone on another continent that the walls of their home are white or that the

weather that day for them was cloudy. While they might indeed have white walls and cloudy skies, it's not because I do. And if in fact they tell me their walls are wood paneling and the sky is clear, it would make no sense for me to insist otherwise. All of that is simply my way of encouraging folks to explore spiritual reality for themselves, to share what they find, and to accept that it's ok when other people find something different. Tools of the Craft

The Besom is the Witch's most familiar magickal tool. Like the cauldron, the besom was an everyday household object and could not be held up as a sign of witchcraft in the courts. This fact elevated their prominence as magickal tools, often taking the place of wands and

staves. Because of this association it is not surprising that they quickly became objects of magickal protection. Besoms were often placed near the hearth of the home to protect the opening, and many pagans still believe a besom at the fireplace will prevent evil from entering. If negativity is a problem, just take your besom and visualize yourself sweeping those feelings out the door. Using the besom to sweep away negativity from a circle site was common practice, one still observed by many pagans. The besom is a phallic symbol and was used by female witches in fertility rites, and it is from this that the idea of the Halloween witch riding around on a broomstick also may have materialized. The sweeping end was usually made of the European broom herb, a feminine herb. Thus the broom was complete as a representation of the male and female together. Be it a bundle of herbs or a fine, long, well-worn broom for the Witch it is far from a simple household item. The Besom is used to cleanse sacred space in preparation for magickal working. Many also believe the besom should never touch the floor, hence many Witches have them hanging. ----------------------------------------------------------

Witches Bottle

By Forever Autumn Whether you are a seasoned witch or just exploring your gifts, witches bottles are a valuable medium to perform witchcraft. They allow you to express your gifts in a wonderful way. Historically, witches bottles have been used for centuries. There have been witches bottles discovered in England that are hundreds of years old. One that was discovered in Sussex, England had been buried since approximately 1720, and contained pubic hair, an eyelash, human urine, and eight bent brass pins. When researchers opened it, there was a hiss like escaping gas. (Info courtesy of Discovery Channel) A witches bottle can be made of almost anything. My personal choice, though, would be a bottle made from a natural source, as opposed to something plastic. What to put into your bottle? That would depend on what you are trying to accomplish. Use your intuition. It is one of your most valuable gifts. Put in your bottle what your spirit tells you to. That will increase the power of your spell. There is no right or wrong thing to put inside of them. I will warn you, if you go natural and put urine in the bottle, or maybe you are a little more modern and try

vinegar instead, keep the bottle out of the sun. They will, and do explode when exposed to heat. Try to find items to put into your bottle that correspond with what you are trying to do. For an example, let us suppose you are trying to make a bottle for protection against someone who is trying to cause you harm: You may want to put in sharp objects, like nails or pins. Broken glass is good. I like to put a small mirror in my protection bottles, so that whoever would cause me harm, would see themselves, and remember to see me, as they would themselves. Whatever oils and herbs you like for personal protection should be added. If it is protection from an old grudge, you may want to consider putting an old bone of some kind in the bottle to symbolize the death of the conflict. If the spell you are casting is to draw something towards you, you may want to decorate your bottle. Use all the energy you can find. Use colored ribbons to decorate your bottle. Choose the color that represents what you wish to accomplish. Choose your oils and herbs by the same token. You can add charms, or trinkets. Hair from a loved one, braided with your own hair is nice. Notes or photographs add a personal touch to the jar, and direct the application of the power you create when you craft your spell. Dont be afraid to whisper things into your bottle. Where to put your bottle will depend on what you are trying to do. If it is for protection, keep it close, or inside your home. If it is to keep someone or something away from you, try burying it at your property line.

Witches bottles have been found inside the trunks of old trees. They were placed in the branches, close to the trunk, and the tree grew up around them. That would be awesome power! I have thrown witches bottles in the river, when I wanted someone to move away. (Be careful here, the first time I tried this, I forgot which way the river was flowing, and drew the person closer to my home!) Witches bottles are one of the most personal ways to cast a spell. They require so much of Yourself, your spirit, what you believe. The way you choose your items, with care and deliberation, all add so much more power to yourself and your spell.

Its Yule Time

By Magickal Lotus It is the longest night of the year; the Yule Log is on the fire, the Mistletoe hung over head, candles of green, red, and gold are lit on the altar. As Holly & Ivy invite the spirits in, it is the return of the Sun God; the birth of the Divine King to the Mother Goddess. Children go from house to house carrying Clove Spiked Apples & Oranges, dancing in spirals, laying baskets of Evergreen and Wheat stalks at their neighbors doors as a symbol of immortality and the returning Sun. Chanting: The Sun God is coming and all will grow, all will grow, all will come alive!!! Families gather with each other drinking Spiced Cider and Wassail, and eating pies and puddings, feasting, the return of the Sun.

The Yule tree stands in the window, adorned with creations of Earth, sparkling with candle light that shines brightly over the gifts below.

It is time, the Wheel has again turned. Life is but anew and all wishes of prosperity and health for the coming season of spring. The Mother Goddess has once again given birth to Her Sun, and all will flourish with his light, making the Earth a home filled with life. Until once again the Wheel of Life turns. YULE MEDICINE WHEEL

Yule is the time to celebrate the rebirth of the sun, the Sun God and honor the Horned God. Yule, being the longest night of the year is also when the balance of night and day is suspended,

giving way to the coming light. This is the official first day of winter. Its a time of reflection, to look on the past year's trials, blessings, growth and achievements. Yule is also a time when many of us feel alone, lost, depressed and downright awful. With so many celebrations going on, how and why is this possible? The answer is not a simple clear cut one. So with this in mind, I have made a Yule Medicine Wheel to help those who are not feeling very festive, or who are ill or in need of strengthening their spiritual connections with the God/Goddess.

What is a Medicine Wheel and how can it help us? A Medicine Wheel is a physical manifestation of Spiritual energy. Its an outward & visual expression of an internal dialogue, a reflection of our inner selves; a wonderful protection tool that enables and allows us to gather energies from our surroundings and put them into a focal point in order to allow us to better commune with Sprit, Self and Nature. In essence, all elemental forces - which is CREATION!!!

As we grow, we change like the seasons, passing through the sections of the circle. The center of the circle is the touching of the Spirit; the pure of heart; the truth as everything extends from the circle and everything comes together in the middle. As I looked at the Medicine Circle, I saw all four seasons. I thought how wonderful it is that all four seasons connect or come from the center! With Yule in mind I started to think that these four seasons as a representation of me and my growth in the past year!!! I see all of my blessings, growth, and protection when I needed it and just love of Spirit!!! I thought how wonderful it would be to have this refection of my year put into a Medicine Wheel! This serves two purposes, one to remind me of all I have to be grateful for and two, as a tool I can use when I need it, using the elements and what they have to offer for my needs at the time. So heres my idea: To make a Medicine Wheel using the elements and filling it in with herbs representing of Yule! Starting with the Center: Color is Green, representative of Self, Balance, Beauty and Harmony. I then would fill this center with herbs to help enhance these things in and for me. BASIL is a sacred herb used for peace and happiness at home. Basil is used to protect the home from evil. Basil is known as Albahaca, American Dittany, 'Our Herb', St. Joseph's Wort, Sweet Basil, and the Witches Herb. Basil is considered masculine, associated with the Planet Mars and the element of Fire. An herb for money and success, a happy family, and a peaceful home, it drives away the Evil Eye. CLOVES are used to draw friendship and money. Cloves are considered masculine, and are associated with the planet Jupiter and the element of Fire. NUTMEG is used to bring good luck in games of chance. Nutmeg is considered masculine, and is associated with the planet Jupiter and the element of Fire.

ROSEMARY is a powerful guardian and a protector of woman. This wonderful herb is widely used to bring good dreams, keep marriage faithful and the home peaceful, and for brewing up cleansing and beautifying baths. Rosemary is also known as Compass Weed, Dew of the Sea, Elf Leaf, Guardrobe, Incensier, Polar Plant, and Sea Dew. Rosemary is considered masculine and is associated with the Sun and the element of Fire. THYME is lucky in two ways: Thyme can bring peace of mind while sleeping, and it can protect your money. Thyme is also known as Common Thyme and Garden Thyme. Thyme is considered feminine and is associated with the planet Mars and the element of Fire. I chose these particular herbs because they are all fire herbs and my spirit is Fire based. I felt that they work best for me. When making your own medicine wheel, feel free to pick the herbs that best correspond with your elemental base. North: Color is white, element is air. Representative of receiving energy, mental aspects, wisdom and logic. So for herbs to help enhance these aspects, I chose the following: MISTLETOE: Used for protection, love and health SAGE: Intuition, purification, wisdom and wishes BAY: Psychic powers, protection, healing, purification, strength GRAPE SEED: Mental clarity East: Color is Yellow. Element: Sun/Fire. Representative of determined energy, spiritual aspect, illumination & enlightening. ALLSPICE: Determination and energy BAY: Clairvoyance, finding what is hidden, inspiration, psychic powers, renewal, strength and wisdom CINNAMON: Divination, meditation, (concentration) and spirituality mental powers

CLOVE: House blessing, metal powers (memory) money, peace, prosperity, protection, psychic powers and protection and uncrossing South: Color is Red. Element is Water. Representative of energy, emotional aspects, trust and innocents. APPLE SEED: Ancestors, anti-depression, happiness, magickal wands (especially for healing, emotional magick and love), wisdom and Yule IVY: Attachments, friendship, knot magick, luck, success MYRRH: Esbats, emotional healing, meditation, (tranquility), release, success, transformation and visions peace

West: Color is Black. Element is Earth. Representative of physical holds and energy, physical aspects, introspection and insight. BAYBERRY: Luck, prosperity, Yule material objects, money, peace (home),

HOREHOUND: Increases energy and strength, both physically and mentally. Increases concentration and focus MOSS: Strengthen clairvoyant powers, cell regenerator, stimulating natural defenses and revitalizing the body

Once I have made my medicine wheel and filled it in with the needed herbs, I would place it on my altar and some sacred space for my use when and as I need it. I hope that others can find this a useful Yule tool and will try making their own. Yule Blessings to all!!! Rev. MoonChild

I Got a Yule Babe A Humorous Story begun from last issue Much gratitude from various members of Broomriders
After several years had passed, 13 Witches gathered again. The Crone was now 113 yrs old, and still as ornery as ever. The toad ... well well well seems to have gotten a mate. But this mate is not just any conventional mate! The toad's mate is from the unfathomable woodland of the Wildness Bowls. Toad's mate, named Twyla, dearly loved hot pink nail polish with sparkles. But it was impossible to find at Wildness Bowls so Toad, determined to find his lover's heart's desire, set out on a journey...

"Vegas baby" ... Toad was going to look in the depths of Vegas for his hearts desire. Toad stepped off the bus and soon discovered He was in the Hood , yes da hood in good old Chicago. Of course Toad did not at first realize this, and What? It is snowing in Vegas?, thought the Toad. And where the hell are the slot machines in the men's room? There's a slew of slot machines in the men's room, but the guys are peeing on them! Oh...wait....those aren't slots... those are............[Link]... my bad. Toad, now thoroughly disgusted with himself, decided it was best to jump into a nice cool bowl of Yule Punch. Chuck full of slices of oranges, cinnamon sticks, vodka and... ... red wine. Dripping and sticky, he decided he needed to get back to the forest, as soon Yule be here. However he also wanted to get some gifts for his friends (The Witches), and wanted to give the Crone a special gift. Also he wanted to make peace. He decided to hitch a ride out of this hood, and he did on a truck. On his way back to the forest, Toad stopped in a Mystical shop. He thought for certain he would find a gift for the Witches. Toad saw an amazing item that would make a special gift for the Crone. It was a big, black... ... jewel encrusted tub in which she could soak her dentures. And displayed next to it, the hot pink nail polish with sparkles for his beloved. Poor Toad only had enough money for just one gift. Just as he was deciding on which gift to get, all of a sudden a loud explosion

came from outside the store. He went to see what had happened and... OMY to what a wondering eye... It was Mr. Scrooge!!!!! as Pist off as ever -- someone hit his long limo. It was the other Witches flying drunk, and also holiday shopping... (They had to do extra shopping as there was a brand new member to their circle, just in time for Yule...) The new witch was as beautiful as can be. She was virtually flawless, except her toes. Her toes were of different lengths and colors. How can that be, you ask? Well, it all happened when she was a young witchling conducting her first affection spell on the famous actor, The Rock... it backfired for the reason that... ... She used a rather large boulder to represent "The Rock" in her spell, and while raising the rock high above her head, it tumbled out of her hands, crashing on top of her feet, crippling her temporarily but disfiguring her toes for life. Her beauty was beyond any uglies her toes revealed... even Scrooge was enamored with her! If she would be his forever, he would give her anything she asked for... including toe surgery. She was thrilled!!! Having everything a beautiful Witch could want... she asked for the ONLY thing most don't have... her own tropical island! There she'd have all the amphibians, exotic plants, and native "blood" she could want! Yahteze!!
