The French Revolution: Maximilian Robespierre

Process Paper Josh Knight Senior Division Individual Website

In my English class, we are currently studying the novel A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. This novel vividly portrays the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror. I decided to learn more about this period and the events attributed to it. I eventually learned that Robespierre was a key figure in the Terror, not only instigating it, but also vigorously defending it as necessary. The first place I went to for research was the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee library. As it turned out, the library contained an entire section devoted to the French Revolution. It included both eyewitness and historian accounts of the Terror and the execution of Louis XVI. More importantly, it contained several biographies of Robespierre. The next thing I did was conduct online research. I used the Wikipedia reference sections on both the Reign of Terror and Robespierre articles. While Wikipedia itself is not credible, the references it uses for its articles are. When choosing presentation category, I immediately ruled out the presentation and paper categories. I also decided that a documentary would require video-editing skills that I do not possess. I eventually decided on a website because I have some skill with HTML and absolutely none with physical displays. To create the website, I used the [Link] site builder. Maximilien Robespierre relates to the history topic because he was a key figure in the French Revolution. He instituted reforms in the French government that would eventually lead to the Reign of Terror and "La Guillotine." Finally, he eventually overstepped his boundaries, causing a public reaction that led to the end of the Terror and the end of Robespierre.
