Fish Classification
Objective:
Students will classify Utahs Native fish species using a key they create.
Utah Core Curriculum:
Standard V, Objective 3
Materials Needed:
Utahs Native Fishes Viewer Software Pencil Paper
Directions:
1. Introduce the concept of dichotomous keys to the students by doing a simple example as a class (geometry shapes, leaves, etc.). 2. Have the students try identifying Utahs native fish species using the dichotomous key provided. 3. Next, have the students use Utahs Native Fishes Viewer software to create their own dichotomous key. 4. Have the students use each others keys to identify different fish.
Additional Activities:
Classify Utahs native fish with specific parameters (habitat, feeding, etc.) Classify geographical landmarks important to fish (Great Salt Lake, Provo River, etc.)
